Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao - 100 Bailable

Review by Devin Reams

100 Bailable by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao: A Salsa Slugfest You Can’t Ignore Alright, buckle up. This ain’t your grandma’s polite salsa record—100 Bailable is a straight-up Latin firestorm. Released in ‘76 under TR Records and Discos Orbe Ltda., this album slaps hard enough to knock you into next week. It’s raw, unfiltered energy from start to finish, with tracks like “El Bodeguero” and “Jazmin” sticking in my brain like gum on a hot summer sidewalk. Let’s talk about “El Bodeguero” first because damn, it hits different. The bassline? Willie Cintron flexing so hard he might as well be bench-pressing the whole track. And don’t even get me started on Hector “Bomberito” Zarzuela’s trumpet work—it’s sharp enough to cut glass but smooth enough to make you forget you’re bleeding. This tune feels like walking through a sweaty NYC block party back in the day, where everyone's either dancing or yelling at each other for stepping on their shoes. That tambora beat from Ramon Filion just punches you in the chest over and over until you can’t help but move. It’s relentless. Perfect. Then there’s “Jazmin.” Man, this one sneaks up on ya. It starts off all mellow, like someone lulling you into a false sense of security before BAM—the horns explode outta nowhere, and suddenly you're caught in some kinda musical ambush. Jose Febles’ vocals are raspy gold here, dripping with emotion like he’s spilling secrets only you’re allowed to hear. Throw in Ray Hernandez laying down those maracas and guiro grooves, and boom—you’ve got yourself a vibe that sticks around long after the needle lifts off the record. What makes 100 Bailable stand out is how chaotic yet tight everything feels. Like yeah, these guys were probably sweating buckets in whatever cramped studio they recorded this in, but they still managed to lock in like a well-oiled machine. Ruben “Bongo” Figueroa and Orlando “Chachi” Osorio trading rhythms on bongos and congas? Absolute madness—but the good kind. Same goes for Sergio Rivera tickling that piano like it owes him money. Every note screams passion and grit, no fancy polish needed. Here’s the kicker though—this isn’t just music; it’s an experience. Listening to this album feels like stepping into a time capsule filled with booze, sweat, and people who know how to throw down. Sure, some parts feel rough around the edges, but that’s what makes it real. These dudes weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they were too busy rolling over anyone dumb enough to stand in their way. And honestly? If I had to sum this thing up in one sentence, it’d be this: 100 Bailable doesn’t ask permission—it demands attention. So crank it loud, let loose, and don’t act surprised when your neighbors call the cops 'cause they think a fiesta broke out in your living room. Oh, and fun fact: Did you catch that “El Chino,” “El Gallo,” and “El Melao” appear twice on the tracklist? Either someone messed up big time or they knew exactly what they were doing. Either way, it works. Go figure.
