Waltzes of Vienna: Jesse Crawford’s Forgotten Gem If you’re the kind of person who thinks classical music is all stuffy wigs and dusty concert halls, Waltzes of Vienna by Jesse Crawford might just change your mind. Released in 1956 under Decca and Brunswick labels, this album feels like stepping into an old-world ballroom where the air smells faintly of perfume and everybody knows how to twirl properly. It’s got that golden-era charm—equal parts romantic, dreamy, and oddly comforting. Let’s get one thing straight: Jesse Crawford wasn’t messing around when he sat down at the organ for this record. The guy had a knack for turning these waltzes into something alive, almost breathing. You can practically hear the creak of his shoes on the pedal as he takes you through tracks like “Merry Widow Waltz” and “Vienna, City Of My Dreams.” These aren’t just tunes—they’re little windows into another time. Take “Merry Widow Waltz,” for example. This one sticks with me because it’s got this sneaky way of making you feel fancy even if you're sitting in sweatpants eating cereal. There’s a lushness to it, like velvet curtains swaying in the breeze, but there’s also this playful bounce that keeps things light. Every note seems to say, "Hey, life ain’t so bad, huh?" And honestly? That’s exactly what I need some days. Then there’s “Vienna, City Of My Dreams,” which feels like staring out of a train window while the world blurs past. It starts slow, almost hesitant, like it’s trying to remember something precious. But then it builds—oh man, does it build—into this sweeping crescendo that makes your chest swell. By the end, you half-expect to look down and see yourself wearing a monocle or holding a champagne flute. No joke. The whole album leans hard into its operetta roots, with plenty of instrumental flair and enough romance to fill a dozen black-and-white movies. Tracks like “Gold And Silver” shimmer with elegance, while “Waves Of The Danube” flows smoother than a lazy river on a summer afternoon. It’s easy listening, sure, but not in the boring dentist-office way. More like… the kind of music that makes you forget to check your phone. What’s wild about Waltzes of Vienna is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out over half a century ago, but there’s nothing dated about it. Maybe it’s because waltzes are forever—or maybe it’s because Jesse Crawford knew how to make an organ sing like nobody else. Either way, this album has a heartbeat. A really big, dramatic, theatrical heartbeat. So here’s the unexpected part: listening to Waltzes of Vienna made me realize how much we’ve lost in our rush toward modernity. Not just the music itself, but the feeling behind it—the idea that slowing down and spinning around a dance floor could be revolutionary. Or maybe I’m just getting sappy. Who knows? Anyway, next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by playlists full of algorithms and auto-tune, give this one a spin. Let Jesse Crawford transport you to a place where everything moves in three-quarter time and every moment feels like magic. Your ears—and probably your soul—will thank you.

American pianist and organist (December 2, 1895 Woodland, California May 28, 1962 Los Angeles, California). He was well-known in the 1920s as a theater organist for silent films and was a very popular gramophone record recording artist. In the 1930s, he switched to the Hammond organ and became a freelancer. In the 1940s, he authored instruction books on organ and taught organ lessons. Early years Crawford's father died when he was one year old and his impoverished mother placed the baby in an orphanage asylum near Woodland, California. He taught himself music at the orphanage, and by the age of nine he was playing a cornet in the orphanage band. At age 14 he left the orphanage to play piano in a small dance band, and then took a job playing piano in a ten-cent-admission silent film house. His early theatre organ experience was at Washington's Spokane Gem Theater in 1911 and at the Clemmer-owned Casino Theatre (on an eight-rank Estey organ). He next played briefly at theatres in Billings, Montana, Spokane, Washington and Seattle. When he met Oliver Wallace, Crawford learned about the then-new types of theatre organ sounds. Crawfords next jobs were playing at the Strand in San Francisco and the Mission Theatre in Los Angeles. 1920s: Silent movie organist In the 1920s, he became well-known, and was dubbed the of "Poet of the Organ" for his style of playing ballads. In 1921, the Balaban and Katz theatre chain hired Crawford to Chicago to play its 29-rank Wurlitzer in the Chicago Theatre. Next, Crawford was hired as the organist at Grauman's Million Dollar Theatre in Los Angeles, playing a large Wurlitzer theatre organ. From 1926 to 1933, he performed at New York City's Paramount Theater, with his wife (also an organist) playing a twin organ console. After some recordings for the small local Autograph Records label, Crawford made a series of records for the Victor Records label which proved very popular with record buyers. He had hits such as "Rose Marie
