Spirited Away Suite by Joe Hisaishi: A Sonic Journey That’ll Mess With Your Feels Alright, let’s talk about Spirited Away Suite by Joe Hisaishi. Released in 2019, this album is like that one friend who shows up uninvited but ends up being the life of the party. It’s got J-Pop vibes with a dash of Asian Pop and just enough Pop/Rock to keep things spicy. And hey, it’s Japanese through and through—because where else would you find music so dreamy it feels like stepping into a Studio Ghibli movie? Now, I’m not gonna bore you with every single track (because ain’t nobody got time for that), but two songs really stuck with me: “Spirited Away Suite” and “World Dreams.” Let me break ‘em down for ya. First off, “Spirited Away Suite”—duh, right? This piece is basically what happens when nostalgia puts on its Sunday best. If you’ve ever seen Spirited Away (and if you haven’t, why are you even here?), this track will hit you like a ton of bricks wrapped in silk. The strings swell, the piano whispers secrets only your soul understands, and before you know it, you’re sobbing over Chihiro’s journey all over again. Honestly, it’s almost unfair how good Hisaishi is at making grown adults cry in public. Then there’s “World Dreams,” which sounds like the soundtrack to an epic road trip you never took. It starts slow, kinda like when you’re trying to figure out if you locked the front door, but then BAM—it kicks into gear with these lush orchestral layers that make you feel invincible. Like, yeah, I can totally conquer my student loans today! Spoiler alert: You probably won’t, but at least you’ll have great background music while you scroll TikTok instead. The rest of the album has gems too, like “Le Petit Poucet” and “Encounter for String Orchestra,” but let’s be real—they didn’t slap me across the face as hard as those first two did. And that’s okay! Not every song needs to steal your heart; sometimes they just hang out in the background looking cool. Here’s the thing about Spirited Away Suite: it reminds you that music doesn’t need lyrics to tell a story. Sometimes, all it takes is a violin and some serious emotional blackmail. Listening to this album feels like finding an old journal from high school—you remember exactly how you felt back then, even if you weren’t sure what you were feeling in the first place. Oh, and fun fact: Joe Hisaishi composed most of his iconic works using chopsticks as drumsticks. Okay, I made that up. But wouldn’t it be awesome if it were true? So yeah, give Spirited Away Suite a spin if you want to feel all the feels without having to watch an actual movie. Just don’t blame me when you start crying in the shower.

About Joe Hisaishi

Joe Hisaishi (ๅ߳ ୲, Hisaishi Joe) was born on December 6, 1950, in Nagano. He started his career as a composer of modern music when he was still a student at the Kunitachi College of Music.
