Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Malign Star

Review by Rodney Booe

Malign Star by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: A Raw, Haunting Journey Through Rock's Dark Soul Let’s get one thing straight—Nick Cave doesn’t do “safe.” And Malign Star, the 2014 live album from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, is no exception. Released under Supersonic Scientists in the UK, this record feels less like a polished studio project and more like an unfiltered gut-punch of raw emotion. It’s messy, it’s intense, and damn if it doesn’t stick with you long after the last note fades. The tracklist reads like a greatest hits collection—but don’t let that fool you. This isn’t just another live album; it’s a reckoning. Two tracks stand out for me personally: “The Mercy Seat” and “Deanna.” Let me tell ya why they hit different. “The Mercy Seat” opens with this creeping tension, like something bad’s about to happen but you can’t look away. By the time Nick starts singing, his voice cracks and strains against the weight of the lyrics—it’s almost too much to handle. You feel every ounce of fear, guilt, and defiance as he belts out lines like, “And the mercy seat is waiting / And I think my head is burning.” It’s not just music; it’s a confession, a scream into the void. When the band kicks in full force, it’s electric—like being caught in a storm you never want to end. Then there’s “Deanna,” which flips the mood entirely. Where “The Mercy Seat” drags you down into darkness, “Deanna” grabs you by the collar and shakes you awake. It’s wild, unhinged even, with Nick howling like a man possessed. There’s this relentless energy driving the song forward, and when the chorus explodes, you can practically see the crowd losing their minds. It’s chaotic, yes, but also weirdly cathartic. Like, who hasn’t felt that kind of desperate obsession at some point? (No judgment here.) What makes Malign Star so special isn’t just the songs themselves—it’s the way Nick and the band breathe new life into them. These aren’t stale reproductions; they’re living, breathing creatures that evolve right before your ears. Tracks like “The Weeping Song” or “Tupelo” take on fresh dimensions live, while deeper cuts like “Christina The Astonishing” remind you why Nick Cave is basically a poet with a mic. But here’s the kicker—the album ends with Nick introducing a poem. Not a song, not a big finale, just…a poem. At first, I was like, “Wait, what?” But then it hit me—that’s exactly what makes Nick Cave so brilliant. He doesn’t care about giving people what they expect. He gives them what they need, whether they realize it or not. So yeah, Malign Star might not be perfect. Some transitions are rough, some moments feel rawer than others—but honestly? That’s kinda the point. This isn’t background noise; it’s front-and-center soul-baring. Listening to it feels like stumbling into someone else’s fever dream—and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
