Killswitch Engage - Set This World Ablaze

Set This World Ablaze: Killswitch Engage’s Metal Masterpiece That Still Burns Bright Let me tell ya, Set This World Ablaze isn’t just an album—it’s a freakin’ time capsule. Released in 2005 by Roadrunner Records and Moon Records, this thing is like a snapshot of everything that made Killswitch Engage one of the most exciting bands in heavy music back then. It’s not your typical studio album; it’s more of a wild mixtape packed with live tracks, demos, and some unreleased gems. And honestly? It feels like they threw every ounce of passion into this record—and man, does it show. Genre Soup That Works You’ve got metal, rock, pop/rock vibes all mashed together here. But don’t let that confuse ya—it ain’t messy. Instead, you get styles ranging from heavy-as-hell progressive metal to nu-metal bangers, even dipping into grindcore chaos and hardcore grit. The result? A sonic rollercoaster that keeps you on edge but never lets go. Whether you’re headbanging or just zoning out to the lyrics, there’s always something fresh around the corner. Tracks That Stick With You Okay, so I gotta shout out two tracks that hit hard for different reasons: “Rose of Sharyn” and “The End of Heartache.” First up, “Rose of Sharyn.” Oh man, this song slaps. There’s something about Howard Jones’ vocals—they’re raw, emotional, and totally unfiltered. When he belts out those lines, it feels like he’s pouring his soul straight into your ears. The guitar work from Joel Stroetzel? Insane. Every riff hits like a punch to the chest, but in the best way possible. This track reminds me why I fell in love with metal in the first place—it’s got heart, power, and enough energy to light up a stadium. Then there’s “The End of Heartache,” which comes at you in both studio and live versions on this album. If you’ve ever been through a breakup—or heck, any kind of loss—this one will wreck you. Jesse Leach wrote part of this, and you can feel his pain bleeding through every word. Listening to the live version recorded on July 25th, 2005, is almost surreal. The crowd screams along like they’re living the lyrics too, and it makes you realize how universal these emotions really are. Heavy music doesn’t just entertain—it connects. Behind the Scenes Vibes One cool thing about this album is how personal it feels. Mike D’Antonio didn’t just play bass—he handled the artwork and layout too. Like, dude wore multiple hats and killed it. And props to Adam Dutkiewicz for mixing the whole thing because, damn, it sounds tight. Even the photography by Lex Halaby adds this gritty authenticity to the whole package. These guys weren’t phoning it in—they cared about every detail. Reflection Time Here’s the thing: Set This World Ablaze wasn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s kinda messy, honestly, with its mix of old songs, new ones, live takes, and demos. But maybe that’s what makes it special. It’s real. Raw. Unfiltered. Listening to it now, years later, it still feels alive—not stuck in 2005 but breathing, kicking, screaming. And you know what? For all the heaviness, there’s hope buried in here somewhere. Maybe that’s why people keep coming back to Killswitch Engage—they remind us we’re not alone in the darkness. Or maybe I’m just overthinking it. Either way, crank this album loud and let it burn. Your neighbors might hate you, but trust me, your soul won’t regret it. P.S. Who else thinks “Exit Jesse… Enter Howard” should’ve been a Netflix doc title? Just saying.

The new singer can’t even hold a candle to this guy. Never dove real deep into them live. Very powerful. I heard an interview with the new singer and he said that him and Howard have different vocal styles which is true but really when i think of Killswitch i think of Howard!!!

I've only seen K S E twice. I've only bought the cds with Howard on vocals. My first intro to this band
River City Rock fest and Jesse was back. Went to the Knotfest in Austin and Jesse was on vocals. Killer singer but Howard's vocals cut thru the awesome loudness of the band. This here is my only view of them. And it's good enough for me.?

Wow! Seems so uncommon to see similarities in vocals between live and studio versions. Howard Jones sounds almost identical live to what he sounds like in the studio! A voice that beautiful doesn't need edits ?
