Album Review: Top Tracks 2011 by Lukas Alexander Lundén Lukas Alexander Lundén’s Top Tracks 2011 is a genre-bending odyssey that fuses jazz with electronic experimentation, creating an experience that feels both cerebral and visceral. Released in 2012 under Finland's Terranean Recordings, this DJ mix album dives deep into styles like industrial, drone, noise, contemporary jazz, dub techno, and experimental soundscapes. It doesn’t just push boundaries—it smashes them to pieces. The standout track, fittingly titled “Top Tracks: 2011,” encapsulates the essence of Lundén’s artistry. The piece opens with a brooding bassline that feels like wandering through a foggy Helsinki night. Gradually, layers of glitchy textures and distant saxophone echoes weave together, creating tension without ever fully resolving it. You’re left hanging—but in the best way possible. This track sticks with you because it refuses to be predictable; its unpredictability mirrors life itself, chaotic yet strangely beautiful. Another unforgettable moment comes midway through the album (though it’s hard to pinpoint exact tracks given its continuous mix format). Around the 27-minute mark, there’s a passage where dub techno rhythms collide with what sounds like distorted field recordings—perhaps machinery or urban ambiance. It’s haunting but oddly comforting, as if the chaos of modern existence has been distilled into something listenable. These moments linger long after the album ends, not because they’re catchy, but because they feel real. One thing about Top Tracks 2011 is how unapologetically raw it feels. There’s no attempt to polish away the rough edges, which makes it all the more compelling. Lundén seems less interested in pleasing everyone and more focused on crafting something authentic—an attitude sorely missing in today’s overly curated music scene. Sure, some parts might come off as too abrasive for casual listeners, but isn’t that kinda the point? Reflecting on this album, one can’t help but think about how it defies easy categorization. Is it jazz? Electronic? Experimental noise? Honestly, who cares? Labels aside, Top Tracks 2011 is proof that music doesn’t need to fit neatly into boxes to leave a lasting impression. And hey, maybe that’s why it works so well—it keeps you guessing until the very last beat fades out. Unexpectedly, listening to this record feels like having a conversation with someone who speaks half your language—you catch enough to follow along, but the mystery keeps pulling you back for more.

About Lukas Alexander Lundén

Luke Lund is a self-taught producer, art director and label head (, , ). Though for the past 12 years his repertoire has drawn references anywhere from club culture's obscure fringes and caustic industrial clatter to musique concrète discretion and knuckle-dragging rock it all feeds into his sense of sonic intensities and improvisational, organic production values. Lund's work is fixated on close examination of timbre and texture, at sword's point with passive listening. More recently he has shifted into employing contextual methods of capturing and processing sound, twisting into bewildering new forms. Lund's thrill-seeking live shows capture the same sense of provocation and unpredictability. After a decade of stage-aversion he has found a catalyst in challenging both himself and audience by approaching each performance as a completely unique project. There's a glint of danger involved in his off-the-cuff freeform ventures into uncharted waters, keeping everyone involved on their toes. Lund has toured Europe and released thisquietarmy, (), , among others. Lund has releases with , () and he records in the group with . Having a fascination towards sounds at a tender age whether from the mining town he grew up in; its tranquil archipelago nature; or leftfield electronics of scifi soundtracks he started dabbling in audio manipulation soundscapes in 2008. Discovering that abstract film sound design could be considered music in its own right was a revelation that sparked permanent interest in noise, sound art, dub techniques and experimentalism. 2010 he founded for his efforts and subsequently ventured into rhythmic electronic music, remixing and mastering. 2012 he retired his disparate aliases and reconciled them under the shorthand Luke Lund. Well over a hundred releases in and counting, Lund launched sister label in 2015 which focuses on traditional rock band instrumentation exploring unorthodox structures. 2017 he expanded to physical editions with sub-label , and debuted his songwriting project .
