Sittin’ On Gold: A 1999 Gangsta Hip-Hop Gem That Still Glitters Alright, let’s talk about Sittin’ On Gold, the 1999 joint effort from Mac Mall, Richie Rich, Twright, and Tesz’. Released under Platinum Groove (a label you probably forgot existed), this album is straight-up gangsta hip-hop—no frills, no gimmicks, just raw beats and bars that slap harder than your grandma’s high-five after church. It’s not perfect, but it’s got enough swagger to make you nod your head like a dashboard bobblehead. The album’s kinda funny because it basically feels like five versions of the same track: “Sittin’ On Gold.” Yeah, there’s an instrumental version, a radio edit, a raw album cut, a bonus mix, and even a turntable remix for all you DJ wannabes out there. At first glance, it seems lazy, right? Like they ran out of ideas halfway through recording. But honestly, hearing these different takes gives you a weird appreciation for how versatile one song can be. Plus, it's kinda fun to see which version hits hardest depending on your mood. Now, if I had to pick two tracks that stick in my brain, I’d go with the Raw Album Version and the Turntable Mix. The Raw Album Version is where the magic happens—it’s gritty, unfiltered, and packed with braggadocious rhymes that scream '90s gangsta rap. Mac Mall and Richie Rich trade verses like they're trying to out-cool each other at a pool party, and somehow, it works. You feel every word, every beat drop, and every ounce of confidence dripping off their delivery. If this doesn’t get you hyped, check your pulse—you might be dead. Then there’s the Turntable Mix, which flips the original into something entirely fresh. This version has scratches so sharp you might need a tetanus shot just listening to it. It’s chaotic in the best way possible, like a sonic car chase through Compton. The DJ skills here are legit, and it reminds you why turntablism was such a big deal back in the day. Honestly, this remix alone makes me want to dig up my old vinyl collection and dust off my Technics SL-1200s. So yeah, Sittin’ On Gold isn’t gonna win any Grammys, and it won’t change your life or anything deep like that. But what it does do is give you a solid dose of late-'90s West Coast vibes, complete with trunk-rattling basslines and lyrics about hustlin’, flexin’, and stackin’ paper. Is it groundbreaking? Nah. Does it slap? Absolutely. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album today feels like finding an old pair of sneakers in your closet. They’re worn-out, maybe a little outdated, but damn if they don’t still fit perfectly. And isn’t that what good music’s supposed to do? Make you feel comfortable while reminding you of who you used to be? Final thought: If someone told me Mac Mall and crew were sitting on actual gold during this recording session, I wouldn’t doubt it. These dudes sound like they’re chilling on Fort Knox, spitting bars colder than a freezer full of popsicles. Now excuse me while I go find some bling to match the vibe.

About Mac Mall, Richie Rich , Twright, Tesz'

Along with better-known rappers like and , Mac Mall was one of several who helped put the Cali Bay Area on the map in the mid- to late '90s as a hotspot in the rap game. He collaborated with many of the Bay Area's best producers -- , , and -- and helped define the scene's identity, particularly with his most successful album, Untouchable (1996), which featured perhaps his best-known song, "Get Right." His career simmered out quickly, however. He returned in 1999 after a three-year absence and few listeners seemed to notice. Mall was no longer on a major label and the Bay Area scene was no longer the hotspot it had been a few years earlier. Given his brief moment in the spotlight and his sudden decline, it was perhaps no surprise when Mall changed his style in 2001, incorporating a surprising amount of spirituality on his Immaculate album.
