Album Review: Georgy Girl And Other Music To Watch Girls By – Living Marimbas (1967) Released in 1967, Georgy Girl And Other Music To Watch Girls By by the Living Marimbas is a quirky, genre-blurring effort that fuses jazz, pop, and rock into an easy-listening experience. Backed by RCA Camden and guided by producer Ethel Gabriel, this album feels like a snapshot of its time—equal parts lounge music sophistication and playful experimentation. The arrangements by Leo Addeo, who also conducts, lend a polished yet unpretentious charm to the record. Engineer Bob Simpson ensures clarity in every note, making it sound crisp even decades later. One standout track is “Music To Watch Girls By.” This instrumental gem lives up to its title with a breezy melody that paints vivid scenes of sunlit afternoons and carefree strolls. It’s hard not to imagine sipping something cold while seated at a café as people pass by. The marimba takes center stage here, giving the piece a unique texture that sets it apart from other orchestral numbers of the era. You can tell they were going for a vibe that was both modern and timeless—and honestly? They nailed it. Another memorable tune is “Georgy Girl,” inspired by the theme song from the film of the same name. With its lilting rhythm and whimsical undertones, it perfectly captures the spirit of the movie—a mix of innocence and boldness. The arrangement is light but deliberate, letting the listener revel in the joyous simplicity of the composition. If you’ve seen the film or just have a soft spot for ‘60s pop culture, this one sticks with you long after the needle lifts off the vinyl. While tracks like “Never On Sunday” and “Girls! Girls! Girls!” add variety to the playlist, some listeners might find the overall tone repetitive if played in one sitting. Still, there’s undeniable craftsmanship here. Ethel Gabriel’s production choices shine through, especially in how she balances accessibility with artistry. Looking back, what strikes me most about this album isn’t just its musical merit—it’s the way it encapsulates the fleeting optimism of mid-’60s America and Canada. These weren’t songs meant for deep introspection; they were designed to entertain, to accompany life’s quieter moments. Oddly enough, though, I found myself wondering: would anyone dare release something so unapologetically cheerful today? Probably not—but maybe we need more of it anyway. Rating: ★★★★☆ Final thought: Listening to this album feels like stepping into a world where everyone wore brighter colors and smiled just a little wider. And hey, isn’t that kind of refreshing?

Thanks for posting! Wish they would put this out on CD! Got this album at a garage sale when I was a kid! And loved it. A few months ago ordered it used from an Amazon seller and still love it! But now I can listen to it in stereo. LOL

I saw that LP recently in a second hand shop and misread it as Living Strings and passed it by. I found their later release "Sugar Sugar" and like it. Now if I see a copy of this I'll get it
