Album Review: "Summers Comin' Decided By The Angels" by Ronnie Dawson Alright, so let’s talk about this little gem from way back in 1960—Summers Comin’ Decided By The Angels. It’s one of those albums that kinda sneaks up on you. Ronnie Dawson, hailing from the US and backed by Swan Records, teamed up with Frank Slay and his orchestra for this quirky mix of rock and pop vibes. And yeah, it’s got that early 60s charm but doesn’t feel like just another cookie-cutter record. First off, big shoutout to Bob Crewe and Frank Slay for writing these tunes—they clearly had some fun coming up with this stuff. Now, I’ll be honest, there are only two tracks here: “Decided By The Angels” and “Summer’s Comin’.” But man, they pack a punch. Let’s start with “Decided By The Angels.” This track is straight-up catchy as heck. The orchestration feels kinda lush without being over-the-top, y’know? Like, it’s not trying too hard to impress anyone, which makes it even cooler. There’s something about how smooth Ronnie’s voice glides over the melody—it sticks in your head long after the song ends. You can almost picture yourself cruising down some sunny highway in a convertible (even though convertibles weren’t really my thing back then). It’s got this carefree vibe that screams summer road trip, even if it was released before most highways were built! Then there’s “Summer’s Comin’,” and oh boy, does it deliver what the title promises. It’s bouncy, upbeat, and just plain fun. The rhythm has this playful bounce to it, like you’re skipping rocks at the lake or dancing barefoot in the grass. Honestly, it reminds me of those lazy days when school lets out, and all you wanna do is soak up every bit of sunshine. The horns especially stand out—they give the whole thing an extra kick that keeps things lively. If this track doesn’t make you smile, then buddy, I dunno what will. What gets me thinking, though, is how short the album is. Just two songs? Feels like someone hit stop right when things were getting good! Maybe they figured less is more, or maybe they ran outta budget—who knows? Either way, it leaves you wanting more, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. So yeah, Summers Comin’ Decided By The Angels might not change your life or anything, but it’s definitely worth a listen if you dig vintage rock ‘n’ pop sounds. It’s nostalgic yet fresh, simple yet memorable. Kinda makes you wonder why we don’t hear stuff like this anymore. Oh, random thought: wouldn’t it be wild if aliens found this album floating around space someday? Imagine them vibing to “Summer’s Comin’” while zooming past Saturn. That’d be a scene, huh?
