Review by Ernesto Valdez

Force The Hand Of Chance: A Sonic Odyssey Across Genres and Decades Released in 2008, Force The Hand Of Chance by Psychic TV is a sprawling masterpiece that defies easy categorization. This album feels like an experimental journey through time, blending ambient soundscapes with raw rock energy, folkish undertones, and industrial grit. It’s not just music—it’s an experience. With contributions from legends like Genesis P-Orridge (lyrics) and Peter Christopherson (keyboards, vocals), the record carries a weight of artistic integrity while still managing to surprise. The album spans multiple genres—electronic, psychedelic rock, pop/rock, and even touches of folk and industrial—and was released across countries including the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, France, and the US. Labels such as WEA, Some Bizzare, and Cleopatra lent their support, underscoring its global appeal. But what makes this album truly stand out are tracks like "Terminus" and "Ov Power (Radio Promo Mix)." Let’s dive into those. --- Track Highlights “Terminus” From the opening moments of “Terminus,” you’re immediately pulled into Psychic TV’s kaleidoscopic world. The track builds slowly, layering piano notes over string machine textures until it becomes almost hypnotic. Andrew Poppy’s arrangement work shines here; he crafts something both intimate and grandiose. You can’t help but feel like you’re walking through some surreal landscape, where every sound has meaning—even if you don’t fully understand it. What sticks with me about “Terminus” isn’t just its beauty but how it lingers long after it ends. It’s one of those songs that stays in your head for days, haunting yet comforting at the same time. “Ov Power (Radio Promo Mix)” If “Terminus” is introspective and dreamy, then “Ov Power (Radio Promo Mix)” flips the script entirely. This track bursts forth with pulsating electronic drums and sharp percussion courtesy of Peter Christopherson. Genesis P-Orridge’s vocal delivery adds an unsettling edge, making it impossible to ignore. There’s a sense of urgency here—a call to action buried beneath layers of sonic experimentation. While it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s hard to deny the sheer audacity of the track. It reminds me why Psychic TV has always been ahead of its time, unafraid to push boundaries and challenge listeners. --- Why This Album Stands Out What sets Force The Hand Of Chance apart is its refusal to conform. Tracks range from ethereal ("Part I. Piano And Clarinet.") to chaotic ("Message From The Temple"), creating a patchwork of sounds that somehow cohere. Alex Fergusson’s guitar work provides a grounding force throughout, whether it’s subtle acoustic strumming or bold electric riffs. Meanwhile, Peter Christopherson’s multi-instrumental talents add depth, especially on tracks featuring bells, tubular bells, and vibes. The production quality deserves mention too. Remastered by Craig Thompson, the album retains clarity without losing its rough edges—a testament to Psychic TV’s DIY ethos combined with professional polish. Artwork by John Harwood and design by Neville Brody further enhance the overall package, ensuring the visual matches the auditory impact. --- Final Thoughts Listening to Force The Hand Of Chance feels like stepping into a labyrinthine museum exhibit curated by mad geniuses. Each track offers something new to discover, whether it’s the eerie field recordings in “Part VI. Recording Made At Jonestown” or the meditative calm of “Just Drifting.” Sure, it’s not perfect—some sections drag, and others might alienate casual listeners—but perfection isn’t the point. This album exists to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and blur lines between genres. In a way, Force The Hand Of Chance feels less like a traditional album and more like a living document—a snapshot of Psychic TV’s boundless creativity during a specific moment in time. If anything, it leaves you wondering: could anyone else have made this? Probably not. And honestly, that’s kinda cool. Rating: 8.5/10 Recommended for fans of experimental rock, ambient explorations, and anyone who loves being challenged by their music.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Force The Hand Of Chance* by Psychic TV is like a musical patchwork quilt. It blends so many genres—ambient, psychedelic rock, folk rock, industrial, and more—that it feels like an experiment in sound. What makes it even wilder? One of the tracks includes a recording made at Jonestown, Guyana, during the infamous suicides. That track adds an eerie layer to the album's experimental vibe. You won’t find many albums out there quite like this one!
