Review by Daniel Castilla

Alright, let’s dive into this gem of an album: Trompetenkonzerte mit Maurice André. If you’re into classical music—or even if you’re just curious about trumpet concertos—this one’s worth a spin. It’s got that old-school charm with some serious talent behind it. The album comes from Germany, released by Christophorus, and features Maurice André on trumpet alongside Jean-François Paillard and Karl Ristenpart conducting the Kammerorchester Karl Ristenpart. Oh yeah, and we can’t forget those legendary composers like Haydn (both Joseph AND Michael), Albinoni, Stölzel, and Tartini. Big names, big vibes. Now, I’ll be honest—I’m not gonna pretend I listened to every single track religiously. But two pieces stuck out to me for sure. First up, there’s the Trompetenkonzert Es-Dur (Hob. VIIe:1) by Joseph Haydn. Man, this thing is smooth. Like butter-on-a-hot-pan smooth. You know how sometimes classical music feels stiff or overly formal? Not here. The trumpet dances around the orchestra like it’s having the time of its life, but still keeps everything classy. Maurice André plays with such precision—it’s almost unfair how good he is. Every note feels intentional, yet effortless at the same time. Honestly, I found myself zoning out while listening, but in the best way possible. It’s perfect background music when you’re trying to chill but also want to feel cultured. Then there’s the Trompetenkonzert D-Dur by Michael Haydn. This one hits different. It starts off kinda regal, like “Hey, pay attention!” And then BAM—the trumpet bursts in like it owns the place. There’s something so uplifting about it; it made me wanna grab my imaginary sword and fight dragons or something equally epic. I dunno, maybe that’s overdramatic, but hey, that’s what this kind of music does to ya! Plus, the interplay between the soloist and the orchestra is tight. They’re bouncing ideas back and forth like they’ve been jamming together forever. What really stands out about this album is how polished yet human it feels. Sure, these are centuries-old compositions, but Maurice André brings them to life like they were written yesterday. You don’t need to be a classical buff to appreciate the sheer skill involved here. Even if you’re just vibing in your room or cooking dinner, these tracks will sneak up on you and make you go, “Whoa, wait…what was THAT?” Random thought: Listening to this album makes me wonder what these composers would think if they heard their work today. Would they freak out over modern instruments? Or would they be stoked that people still care about their tunes hundreds of years later? Either way, hats off to Christophorus for keeping this kind of art alive. So yeah, give Trompetenkonzerte mit Maurice André a shot. Whether you’re studying, relaxing, or daydreaming about dragon battles, it’s got you covered. Just don’t blame me if you suddenly develop an urge to learn the trumpet yourself. Trust me, it happens.

(born: May 21th, 1933 in Alès, France - died: February 25th, 2012 in Bayonne, France) Maurice André was born in Alés, close to the mining area of the Cevennes in 1933. He became a miner at the age of fourteen and began studying the trumpet and made very rapid progress. While still in the first year at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris he was awarded the Honorary First Prize for the Horn. In the following year he obtained the First Prize for the Trumpet. Maurice André later received the First Prize in the Munich International Competitions, entering upon a amusical career which took him to Germany where he was very warmly received. He travelled to England and Scandinavia and afterwards to North and South America. He has since travelled throughout the world. His early orchestral posts were with the (1953-1960), the / (1953-1960/1960-1962), and the (1962-1967). He was appointed professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris in 1967. The long series of works that Maurice André has recorded for are by 17th & 18th century composers. Modern composers also wrote works with him in mind, having been struck by the remarkable mastery of his instrument and his impeccable style and ability. He has received many Prix du Disque in France. In Germany, the Berlin Schallplattenpreis was awarded to him, a tribute to the esteem with which he is held in that country. Harry Halbreich has written: "Maurice André incarnates the trumpet! There is an indissoluble link between the rugged golden red appearance of this happy, thickset southerner who sprang from within a mine to a glorious future at lightning speed. At the age of 36 he receives invitations to play from every corner of the globe. The ease with which he plays and his legendary virtuosity are perfectly matched with his wide musical knowledge. His trumpet sings as delicately as a violin note. He has acquired a repertoire which had the great composers of the past had the honour of meeting him, would have been more extensive than it is. His ability is astonishing since he is quite capable of matching up to the acrobatc demands of the Hummel Concerto. He is just as much at ease when playing the classical repertoire as he is when confrontened with a modern work." Father of , , and . Older brother of .
