DJ MFR - Solar Projections

Solar Projections by DJ MFR: A Deep House Time Capsule from 2001 Alright, let’s talk about Solar Projections, the kinda forgotten gem from DJ MFR that dropped back in ’01. It’s one of those albums you stumble on late at night while digging through crates or scrolling Spotify aimlessly. Genre? Electronic. Style? Deep House—smooth, vibey, and dripping with soul. Released under Transport Recordings (a label known for its tight curation), this album feels like a warm hug wrapped in neon lights. First off, shout-out to the crew behind it: Engineer L. Henry Sermiento II kept things crisp, Pranell O'Neal laid down some lush keyboard vibes, and Will I AM (!!!) showed up to bless us with vocals before he blew up as THE Will.i.am. Oh yeah, DJ MFR himself produced the whole thing, which explains why it’s so cohesive—it’s got that signature heartbeat rhythm running through every track. Now, onto the tunes. The album kicks off with “Musik,” and holy cow, does it set the tone. That bassline? Sticky enough to pull your shoes off. And when Will I AM comes in with his smooth-as-honey voice, it’s like… damn, dude knew how to float over beats even back then. What sticks with me is how effortlessly groovy it is—you don’t need to think too hard; just let it wash over you. Bonus points for the "Bonus Beats" version later on, because who doesn’t love an extended remix to keep the party alive? Then there’s “Come With Me.” This one hits different. It’s slower, moodier, almost hypnotic. The keys sound like they’re shimmering underwater, and the vocal hook pulls you in like a siren song. You can tell DJ MFR wasn’t trying to reinvent the wheel here—he just wanted to make something that felt good. Mission accomplished. Every time I hear this track, I picture myself cruising down a desert highway at sunset, windows down, not a care in the world. Oh, and we can’t skip “The Sun.” Super minimal but super effective. If deep house had a zen garden, this would be it. Just close your eyes, breathe deep, and let the percussion ripple like waves lapping at the shore. Simple yet unforgettable. Looking back, Solar Projections feels like a snapshot of early 2000s America—a moment when electronic music was still finding its footing outside underground clubs. It’s not flashy or overly polished, and maybe that’s why it works. These tracks remind me that sometimes less really is more. You know what’s wild though? Listening to Will I AM sing about chilling out here makes me wonder if The Black Eyed Peas ever sampled any of this stuff. Like, did he take these vibes and stash them away for later? Who knows. Anyway, give Solar Projections a spin if you’re into deep house that leans more toward vibe than spectacle. It’s not gonna change your life overnight, but it might become the soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon—or maybe even a little midnight escape. And honestly? Isn’t that all we need sometimes?
