Album Review: La Libertad No Es Gratis Que Color Es La Piel De Dios by The Colwell Brothers, Up With People Folk music often feels like a warm handshake or an old friend sharing stories. This album, La Libertad No Es Gratis Que Color Es La Piel De Dios, from The Colwell Brothers and Up With People, pulls you into its orbit with heartfelt melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. Released under Pace Records, this US-based project blends Folk, World, and Country influences to craft something that feels both intimate and universal. The standout track, "Que Color Es La Piel de Dios," hits hard right out of the gate. Its gentle acoustic strumming lays the groundwork for a vocal performance that’s raw yet polished enough to feel authentic. The song poses a question so profound it lingers long after the final note fades. What color is the skin of God? It’s not just a lyric—it’s a meditation on unity and humanity’s shared essence. You don’t just hear this track; you live it. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to crank this up during a quiet evening or while driving down some dusty backroad? Then there’s "La Libertad No Es Gratis." If the first track asks big questions, this one answers with conviction. Freedom isn’t free, as they say, and the arrangement reflects that weight. The harmonies here are tight but never overproduced, giving the tune a lived-in quality. The rhythm builds gradually, almost imperceptibly, until you realize your foot’s tapping along like it has a mind of its own. It’s the kind of song that makes you pause and think about sacrifice—personal, political, spiritual. Not bad for a folk tune, huh? One thing worth noting is how effortlessly these tracks weave together themes of identity, faith, and freedom. There’s no pretense here, no attempt to be anything other than what it is: genuine storytelling set to music. Sure, the production might lean a tad lo-fi at times, but that only adds charm. It’s like listening to a well-worn vinyl record passed down through generations. In a world obsessed with instant gratification, albums like this remind us why music matters. They challenge us. Inspire us. Heck, they even make us wanna call our grandparents and ask them what life was like back in their day. So yeah, if you’re looking for something real—something that sticks with you longer than your morning coffee—give La Libertad No Es Gratis Que Color Es La Piel De Dios a spin. Just don’t blame me if you start humming “Que Color Es La Piel de Dios” in the shower tomorrow morning.

About The Colwell Brothers, Up With People

The Colwell Brothers were born in Detroit, Michigan. From Detroit, the family moved to Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, a town outside of Bedford. After about three years, the family moved again, this time all the way to Los Angeles, California. It was in LA, when Steve, Paul and Ralph were 14, 12 and 10 respectively, began their music careers. They started off with a five dollar guitar, a second hand banjo and a 'uke'. They started as youngsters do, entertaining friends and performing at school functions. Later, they got their parents to get them some better musical instruments. Before long, they were being invited to appear on various radio programs. By 1952 they were touring as with the program.
