Melissa Manchester - For The Working Girl

Review by Rozalyn Franklin

For The Working Girl by Melissa Manchester: A Time Capsule of 1980 Vibes Alright, let’s talk about For The Working Girl, Melissa Manchester’s gem from 1980. If you’re into Adult Contemporary vibes with a splash of Soft Rock and Ballad feels, this album is totally your jam. It’s got that cozy mix of genres—Rock, Pop/Rock, Vocal—and styles like Music Hall and Ballads that just scream “chill evening” or maybe “staring out the window while pretending life is a movie.” You know what I mean? The album dropped in countries like the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and even Venezuela (yep, she was everywhere). Labels like Arista and BMG backed it, so you know there was some serious muscle behind this project. And honestly? The production team didn’t slack off one bit. With credits like Barry Fasman on horns, Steve Buckingham pulling double duty as arranger and guitarist, and Don Henley adding backing vocals? This thing was stacked. Now, let me hit you with two tracks that stuck in my brain after giving this baby a spin: “Working Girl (For The)” This track kicks things off strong, and man, it sets the tone for the whole album. Right away, Melissa’s voice hits you like a warm hug—it’s smooth but packs an emotional punch. The lyrics are kinda empowering too, talking about hustling hard and owning your grind. Like, who wouldn’t vibe with that message? Plus, those strings and percussion bits? They’re subtle but sneak up on ya, making the song feel bigger than it actually is. Honestly, every time I hear this one, I wanna put on a power suit and conquer the world—or at least clean my apartment like I’m running for office. “Lovers After All (feat. Peabo Bryson)” Okay, real talk—this duet is straight-up magic. Peabo Bryson’s voice blends with Melissa’s so perfectly it’s almost unfair. It’s romantic without being cheesy, which is rare for love songs from this era. There’s something about the way their voices intertwine that makes you believe in soulmates or whatever. The melody builds slowly, letting the emotion simmer before hitting you full force. By the end, I’m sitting there thinking, “Wow, why don’t they make ‘em like this anymore?” Spoiler alert: they probably can’t. --- So yeah, For The Working Girl isn’t perfect—it has its share of predictable moments—but it’s got heart. Like, loads of it. Listening to it now feels like flipping through an old photo album; it’s nostalgic but still relevant in weird ways. Weirdly enough, though, halfway through writing this review, I realized how much I miss music that actually tries to tell a story instead of just looping beats for TikToks. Maybe that’s why albums like this still matter today. Or maybe I’m just getting old. Who knows?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: Melissa Manchester's 1980 album *For The Working Girl* wasn’t just your average pop record. It had an interesting mix of styles, from soft rock to ballads, and even a touch of music hall vibes. What makes it stand out? Well, the album featured some serious star power in the credits. Don Henley, yes *that* Don Henley from The Eagles, lent his voice for backing vocals. And if that’s not enough, the track "Lovers After All" is a duet with none other than Peabo Bryson, who’d later become famous for singing Disney love songs like “A Whole New World.” Oh, and here’s the kicker—it was released in countries as diverse as Venezuela, Japan, and Australia, showing just how universal its appeal was. Not bad for an album inspired by working women!

Does Melissa Manchester recording this great song relate to her not liking the message of "Don't Cry Out Loud"?
