Menudo - Es Navidad

Review by Valontuoja Virtanen

Alright, let’s dive into Es Navidad by Menudo. This 1980 holiday album is a slice of Puerto Rican Christmas magic that still hits different during the festive season. It’s got that Latin flair with styles like Aguinaldo and Latin Pop, so if you’re into music that feels warm, lively, and full of holiday spirit, this one’s worth checking out. Released under Padosa, Inc., it’s kinda like a time capsule of what Christmas in Puerto Rico sounded like back then. The tracklist? Oh man, it’s packed with bangers for the holidays. You’ve got “Las Navidades,” “Chiji Navideno,” “La Gallina,” and more. But two tracks really stuck with me: “Mi Parranda” and “El Tamborilero.” Let me tell ya why. “Mi Parranda” just screams Christmas vibes. If you’ve ever been to a Puerto Rican parranda (basically a Christmas party where people go caroling with instruments), this song nails it. The energy is wild—like, you can almost picture yourself walking through the streets at night, singing your heart out while someone’s strumming a cuatro or banging on maracas. The beat pulls you in, and honestly, it makes you wanna grab a drink and join the fun. I mean, who doesn’t love a good holiday jam that gets everyone hyped? Then there’s “El Tamborilero.” Dude, this one’s smooth but also kinda haunting in a way. The percussion here is no joke—it’s steady and rhythmic, like a drum echoing through an empty street. It gives off those traditional aguinaldo feels without being too over-the-top. Plus, the vocals are just spot-on. There’s something about how they blend together that makes it feel nostalgic, even if you didn’t grow up listening to it. Weirdly enough, it reminds me of those late-night drives when all you hear is rain hitting the windshield and some classic tunes playing softly in the background. Now, don’t get me wrong, not every track will blow your mind. Some songs feel a bit repetitive after a while, but hey, isn’t that kinda the point of holiday music? It’s supposed to loop in the background while you’re wrapping gifts or stuffing your face with arroz con gandules. That said, Es Navidad has charm. Like, it’s not trying too hard to impress—it’s just doing its thing, spreading cheer and keeping traditions alive. Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album made me realize how much we lose touch with old-school holiday sounds these days. Everything now is either Mariah Carey on repeat or some generic pop remix of “Jingle Bells.” But albums like this? They remind us where it all started—for real, though. So yeah, give Es Navidad a spin if you’re tired of the same ol’ holiday playlist. And maybe, just maybe, it’ll make you appreciate the little things, like family, food, and… chickens? (“La Gallina,” anyone?)
