Review by Tom Steenhuysen

Never Gonna Give You Up Rub N Dub by Musical Youth: A Reggae-Dub Time Capsule That Still Hits Let’s cut to the chase—this 1983 gem from Musical Youth is like finding an old mixtape in your attic and realizing it’s secretly a masterpiece. Released under MCA Records, with Peter Collins at the production helm, Never Gonna Give You Up Rub N Dub might sound like it belongs in a time capsule, but trust me, this thing still grooves harder than most modern playlists. First off, let’s talk about the title track, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Wait, hold up—it’s not THAT Rick Astley banger you’re thinking of (though kudos for getting rickrolled in your head). No, this one rides smooth on reggae vibes with dub echoes bouncing around like they own the place. It’s catchy as heck without trying too hard, which is kinda refreshing. The bassline? Pure gold. You can almost picture yourself cruising through Parisian streets or chilling in some sun-soaked European café while this tune plays in the background. Honestly, I remember it because every time I hear those opening notes, my brain goes, “Oh yeah, THIS is what chill feels like.” Then there’s “Rub ‘N’ Dub,” and wow, does this track slap. If dub had a personality, this would be its life-of-the-party alter ego. The rhythm hits just right—enough to make you wanna grab someone nearby and say, “Hey, we should totally dance awkwardly to this!” There’s something hypnotic about how the beats layer over each other, creating this swirling soundscape that feels both nostalgic and oddly futuristic. Like, if aliens ever landed on Earth looking for proof of human creativity, playing them “Rub ‘N’ Dub” wouldn’t be the worst idea. What makes this album stick isn’t just its genre-bending charm; it’s also how unapologetically itself it is. Sure, it came out in the '80s, when shoulder pads were big and hair was bigger, but this record doesn’t try to fit any mold. It’s raw, fun, and has enough reverb to drown out your bad decisions. Plus, it reminds us that sometimes all you need is a killer groove and zero pretense to create something timeless. So here’s the kicker: Listening to Never Gonna Give You Up Rub N Dub today feels like running into an old friend who hasn’t aged a day. And honestly, isn’t that what great music’s supposed to do? Now excuse me while I go figure out why no one thought to put these guys on TikTok yet.

About Musical Youth

Musical Youth are mainly remembered as a child novelty act - but that's not really fair. Formed in Birmingham in the early 1980s by , formerly of as his backing band, Musical Youth could genuinely play and worked in Birmingham pubs (guitarist Kelvin Waite debuting at the age of 7!) before being signed by MCA in 1982. A condition of their signing was that a lead singer "your own age" was acquired, and so Dennis Seaton joined the Waite and Grant brothers. Their first MCA single "Pass The Dutchie
