Themes From The Exorcist Flashpoint by Ray Davies & The Button Down Brass – A Retro Soundtrack Journey Worth Your Time Alright, let’s talk about Themes From The Exorcist Flashpoint. It’s one of those albums that feels like stepping into a time machine—except instead of flux capacitors and DeLoreans, you’re riding on smooth brass tones and cinematic vibes. Released in 2017 (yeah, I know, it’s UK-made), this album is a love letter to fans of stage-and-screen jazz soundtracks. Produced under the Vocalion label, with remastering magic courtesy of Michael J. Dutton, it sounds crisp as fresh linen. Now, if you’re expecting some wild experimentation or avant-garde twists here, nah, this ain’t that kind of ride. What you get instead are classic theme tunes reimagined with flair by Ray Davies & The Button Down Brass—and trust me, they nail it. Let’s dive into a couple of standout tracks so you can see what makes this record tick. First up, there’s “Live and Let Die.” Oh man, how do you even mess with an iconic track like this? Paul McCartney set the bar sky-high with his original version for the Bond flick, but Ray Davies gives it a whole new vibe. Picture this: big band swagger meets punchy brass hits—it’s dramatic without being over-the-top cheesy. You can almost imagine Roger Moore strutting through an airport lounge while this plays in the background. The arrangement keeps things tight, letting the melody shine without drowning in unnecessary frills. Honestly, hearing this cover made me appreciate just how versatile the song really is. Who knew? Then we’ve got “Tubular Bells,” which is basically horror-movie royalty thanks to its role in The Exorcist. This version strips away the eerie minimalism of Mike Oldfield’s original and replaces it with something warmer and more orchestral. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about losing the creep factor, but after a few listens, I realized it works. It transforms the piece into something nostalgic rather than spine-chilling. If anything, it reminds you how timeless these themes are—they adapt well no matter the treatment. What strikes me most about this album is how unpretentious it feels. There’s no attempt to reinvent the wheel; instead, it celebrates the art of reinterpretation. Liner notes by Oliver Lomax add a nice touch too, giving context to each track and making the whole thing feel thoughtful rather than slapdash. So yeah, would I recommend Themes From The Exorcist Flashpoint? Absolutely. Whether you’re a sucker for old-school film scores or just looking for something chill yet classy to throw on during dinner parties, this has got your back. And hey, bonus points for including gems like “Enter The Dragon” and “Kojak”—it’s like a treasure chest of retro goodness. Random thought though: why don’t more artists try revamping soundtrack classics like this? Maybe it’s because not everyone can pull it off quite as effortlessly as Ray Davies does here. Or maybe they’re all too busy chasing TikTok trends. Either way, props to him for keeping the spirit alive. Final verdict? Grab yourself a copy if you dig nostalgia served with a side of brass brilliance. Just don’t blame me when you find yourself humming “Live and Let Die” at work tomorrow.
