Album Review: EP 01 by Anton – A Techno Gem from France
Alright, so let’s talk about EP 01 by Anton. Released back in 2014 under the French label Binome Records, this little slice of techno heaven is one of those albums that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It’s not trying too hard to blow your mind, but trust me—it does.
First off, Anton keeps things pretty minimal and sharp here. The vibe? Pure electronic goodness with a techno heartbeat. There’s no fluff, just straight-up beats and textures that feel like they’re made for either zoning out or losing yourself on a dimly lit dancefloor. Let’s dive into a couple tracks that stuck with me.
Buoyancy—man, this track hits different. Right off the bat, there’s this floaty, almost weightless synth line that feels like drifting through clouds (or maybe that’s just me). But then BAM, the bassline kicks in, and suddenly you’re anchored back down to earth. It’s got this push-and-pull thing going on that makes it impossible not to nod your head along to. You can tell Anton knows how to build tension without overdoing it. Like, he gives you just enough space to breathe before pulling you back in again. It’s clever stuff.
Then there’s Eudaimonia. I mean, what even is that word? Sounds fancy, right? Turns out it means something like “human flourishing,” which honestly fits because this track feels kind of... uplifting? Not in some cheesy, motivational-speaker way, though. More like it builds steadily, layer by layer, until you’re just vibing so hard you forget where you are. The percussion is tight, and there’s this subtle melody weaving in and out that keeps you hooked. If I had to pick one track to play at 3 AM while staring at city lights, this would be it.
The other tracks—Piana, Relapsation, and Annocquian—are solid too, don’t get me wrong. They keep the energy flowing and add their own twists to the mix. But Buoyancy and Eudaimonia? Those two really stood out for me.
So yeah, EP 01 might not reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. Sometimes all you want is an album that gets out of its own way and lets the music speak for itself. And Anton nails that balance perfectly. Oh, random thought—this album kinda reminds me of those late-night conversations you have with friends where no one says much, but everything still feels meaningful. Weird analogy, I know, but hey, music does that sometimes.
If you’re into techno or just looking for something chill yet deep, give this EP a shot. Just don’t blame me if you end up looping it ten times in a row.
