Roger Sellers - Primitives

Primitives by Roger Sellers: A Sonic Gut-Punch That Won’t Let Go Alright, let’s cut the crap. Primitives is one of those albums that sneaks up on you like a stray dog in an alley—scrappy, unpredictable, and kinda beautiful in its weirdness. Released back in 2014 under Punctum Records, this Texas-born mess of sound sits somewhere between indie rock, ambient haze, and experimental chaos. If you’re looking for something safe or radio-friendly, keep walking. But if your ears crave adventure? This might just knock you sideways. Roger Sellers doesn’t mess around here—he performs every damn note himself, layering loops, beats, and textures until it feels like he’s building worlds outta thin air. The genres? Pop/Rock meets Electronic. The styles? Experimental Ambient mashed with Alternative/Indie Rock and Abstract vibes. It’s all over the place but somehow sticks together like duct tape art. And trust me, there’s no shortage of moments that’ll make you go “What the hell did I just hear?” Take Marim, for instance. Holy shit, this track is a trip. It starts off innocently enough, like some chill marimba loop chilling out—but then BAM! Sellers throws down layers of glitchy percussion and haunting synths that feel like they’re clawing at your brainstem. You can’t ignore it; it demands attention like a toddler throwing a tantrum. Every time I listen to it, I get stuck reliving whatever argument I had with my landlord last week—it’s cathartic as hell. Then there’s Steps. Oh man, this one hits different. Imagine walking through a forest where the trees whisper secrets directly into your headphones. The rhythm builds slowly, almost hesitant, like Sellers isn’t sure where he’s going either—but then it explodes into this euphoric swell of noise that makes you wanna run full speed ahead. By the end, you’re left breathless, wondering how the hell you got there. Tracks like these don’t just play—they invade. The rest of the album keeps the energy alive too. Appeals drips with melancholy while still managing to groove, and Waves sounds like drowning in static but loving every second of it. Even shorter tracks like Intro and Omar pack a punch, proving Sellers knows exactly when to leave you wanting more. So yeah, Primitives ain’t perfect. Sometimes it stumbles over itself trying too hard to be clever. But honestly? That’s part of its charm. It’s raw, unfiltered, and refuses to fit neatly into any box—which is exactly why it works. Here’s the kicker though: after listening to this album three times in a row (don’t ask), I realized something strange. Despite all the chaos and noise, there’s a weird sense of calm underneath it all. Like Sellers took his inner turmoil and turned it into a soundtrack for ours. Or maybe I’m just losing my mind. Either way, Primitives sticks with you long after the last note fades. Final verdict? This album’s a beast. Not for everyone, sure, but if you’ve got the guts to dive in, it’ll reward you tenfold. Now excuse me while I lie on the floor staring at the ceiling for another hour.

About Roger Sellers

Austin, Texas indie musician. "The artistic style of Roger Sellers is widely accessible. Imagine folk-dance-americana-electric-symphonic fusion, where Philip Glass, Sufjan Stevens, and Joanna Newson all groove to late night ambient house music in George Martins livingroom."

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Primitives* by Roger Sellers is like a musical chameleon. It blends genres like Pop/Rock and Electronic with styles ranging from Experimental Ambient to Indie Rock. Released in 2014 on Punctum Records, it’s a wild mix of sounds that feels both futuristic and raw. Tracks like "Marim" and "Waves" take you on a journey, almost like listening to an abstract painting. It’s all the work of one guy—Roger Sellers—who performed everything himself. Not bad for a one-man show, right?

Scary ending but the best song I'd come across in youtube in a long time.
What do you think that ending meant? It would make for a good film theory episode XD.
