Suns Of Arqa - Live With Prince Far I

Album Review: Live With Prince Far I by Suns Of Arqa Man, this album is like a passport stamped with vibes from Poland, the UK, and Russia all at once. Released in 1999 under labels like Arka Sound and SPV Poland, Live With Prince Far I feels less like an album and more like a global jam session that got bottled up into something magical. It’s hard to pin down—worldwide beats? Electronic experiments? Reggae roots? Tribal rhythms? Yeah, it’s all of that. And somehow, it works. Let me break it down for you. The genres here are wild enough—dub, downtempo, experimental—but then you throw in global jazz and tribal elements, and suddenly your brain doesn’t know whether to dance or just sit back and let the soundscapes wash over you. That’s the charm of Suns Of Arqa—they don’t care about fitting neatly into one box. They’re out here building their own weird, wonderful world. Now, let’s talk tracks because trying to review every single one would be madness (seriously, there’s like 20+ songs). Two tracks stood out to me so much they’re stuck in my head like gum on a shoe. First up: “83 Struggle (feat. Prince Far I).” Oh man, this one hits different. You’ve got Prince Far I dropping these heavyweight vocals over a thick dub groove, and it’s like he’s telling you secrets about life while also making sure you nod your head. The bassline? Super deep—it feels like it’s vibrating through your chest. There’s something hypnotic about how everything blends together—the tabla work by Kalu Zeria adds this whole other layer of texture, almost spiritual but still grounded. Every time I hear this track, I feel like I’m walking through some smoky basement club where everyone knows the vibe but no one talks about it. Then there’s “Trance Dance Music.” This one’s pure energy. If “83 Struggle” is introspective, this is the opposite—it grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you until you move. The rhythm guitar riffs bounce around like rubber balls, and those synths? Whew, they’re doing things I didn’t even know synths could do. It’s chaotic but controlled, kind of like being caught in a storm but realizing halfway through that you’re actually having fun. Plus, the mix by Phill Rainford gives it this crisp edge that makes every beat pop. Honestly, I think I’ve worn out the repeat button on this track alone. One thing that really struck me about this album is how collaborative it feels. Like, yeah, Wadada’s the mastermind behind it all, but you can hear everyone bringing their A-game. Helen Watson’s vocals soar when she shows up, Tony Trundel’s violin adds this haunting beauty, and Chris Gill’s guitar work ties it all together. Even the artwork by Lee Whitfield looks like it belongs in a museum dedicated to trippy visuals. So what’s the takeaway here? Listening to Live With Prince Far I feels like stepping into someone else’s dream—a dream filled with foggy roads, shamanic chants, and thunderbolts crashing in the background. But here’s the kicker: despite its experimental nature, it never loses sight of being enjoyable. It’s not pretentious; it’s playful, adventurous, and unapologetically itself. And honestly? After spinning this album, I kinda wish I could hang out with Suns Of Arqa in a studio somewhere. Not to make music—just to see what kind of snacks they have lying around during recording sessions. Probably something exotic and super crunchy. Rating: 8.5/10

About Suns Of Arqa

Suns of Arqa creator and mentor Michael Wadada has been continuously investigating the supernatural potential hidden in the Classical Raga structure of the music of India. His mission to mix the cerebral and illusive cosmological vibrations of Raga, with the mother earth rhythms of Niyabinghi drumming that were surfacing in England in the guise of Dub Reggae.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Live With Prince Far I* by Suns Of Arqa is like a musical passport. It blends genres from around the world—reggae, dub, tribal sounds, and even downtempo jazz. What’s wild is that it brought together artists from Poland, the UK, and Russia, creating this global vibe long before digital tools made collaborations across countries common. Tracks like "83 Struggle" and "Foggy Road" feature Prince Far I's powerful vocals, while sitars, tablas, violins, and experimental beats take you on a journey. Even the artwork was crafted by Lee Whitfield, adding another layer of creativity. This album feels less like a record and more like a meeting of cultures frozen in time.

Yeah, a great album that I might have never found if I somehow wasn't introduced to them through a Muslimgauze remix. Hopefully they're getting more support now through the youtube videos. Just had to post this version of the song.
