Makin Illa Noize: A Raw Journey Through 1995’s Hip-Hop Underground Tha Chamba’s Makin Illa Noize, released in 1995, stands as a gritty testament to the golden era of hip-hop. With its roots firmly planted in genres like Gangsta Rap, Hardcore Rap, and Conscious Hip-Hop, this album delivers an unfiltered look into street life, resilience, and raw creativity. Backed by labels Coroner Records, Taha Records, and JTLM Records, the project was a collaborative effort that brought together heavy hitters from both the US and Belgium—a rare cross-continental connection for its time. The production on Makin Illa Noize is handled primarily by Chainsaw Assassin and D.J. Riot One, who bring their unique boom-bap sensibilities to the forefront. The mix of hard-hitting beats, intricate scratches, and haunting loops gives the record an edge that feels timeless even today. Pen & Pixel Graphics’ iconic art direction adds another layer of authenticity, while mastering by Tradd ensures clarity without losing the raw energy. Looking back at this piece of work, I find myself wondering why projects like this don’t get made anymore—or rather, why we stopped paying attention to them. In 2023, mainstream rap has largely traded boom-bap beats and lyrical depth for polished aesthetics and catchy hooks. But then again, maybe albums like Makin Illa Noize weren’t meant for the masses—they were meant for those willing to dig deep, listen closely, and connect with the soul of the culture.
