As a young African American woman raised in the white suburbs outside of NYC, I am inundated with various aspects of American and (Western) world history. I am the embodiment of America's past and present and simultaneously not really seen as an 'American'. "What are you?" is a question I get more often in the black community than otherwise, but it still plagues me, and I intend to find out the answer by learning what makes others who they are.
