A Barca Do Sol - Pirata

Review by Christina Webber

Pirata by A Barca Do Sol: A Wild Ride Through Brazilian Prog That Still Kicks Ass Alright, let’s talk about Pirata—the 1979 masterpiece from A Barca Do Sol that hits like a rogue wave of Folk Rock, Prog Rock, and Art Rock chaos. This album is not your average yacht rock; it’s more like a pirate ship sailing through uncharted waters with Nando Carneiro at the helm, doing everything short of steering the damn boat while playing guitar, piano, and singing his heart out. Released under Verão in Brazil, this record smashes genres like Worldwide, Latin, and Rock into something so uniquely theirs you can’t help but sit up straight and pay attention. Now, full disclosure—I’m not here to sugarcoat anything. Some tracks hit harder than others, but two stood out to me like neon graffiti on a crumbling wall: “Vô Mimbora Pro Sertão” and “Desencontro.” Let’s break ‘em down real quick. First off, “Vô Mimbora Pro Sertão” slaps. It’s got this raw energy that feels like someone lit a match in a dusty desert wind. The flute work by David Gane? Insane. Like, I don’t even LIKE flutes most days, but this thing dances around the rhythm section (shoutout to Marcelo on drums and percussion) like it owns the joint. And when Nando comes in with those vocals? Man, it’s like he’s daring you to look away. You won’t. This track sticks because it’s messy, alive, and dripping with character—like an old friend who shows up drunk at your door but somehow makes perfect sense anyway. Then there’s “Desencontro,” which just punches you right in the gut. No warning, no warm-up—it’s all tension and release, baby. The double bass groans courtesy of Alain Pierre are haunting as hell, setting the stage for some serious emotional warfare. By the time the electric piano kicks in, you’re already hooked. What gets me is how they layer these intricate arrangements without losing the human touch. It’s progressive as fuck, but it doesn’t forget its roots. Feels like staring at a stormy sky and realizing you’re part of something way bigger than yourself. Look, I’ll admit, Pirata ain’t perfect. There are moments where the ambition overshoots the mark, and yeah, maybe one or two songs feel repetitive if you listen back-to-back. But honestly? That’s what makes it feel REAL. These guys weren’t trying to play it safe—they were swinging for the fences, and most of the time, they nailed it. And hey, here’s the kicker: this album came out in 1979. Forty-plus years later, it still sounds fresh as hell. Maybe that’s why nobody talks about it enough—it doesn’t fit neatly into any box. Or maybe people are just scared of its weirdness. Either way, Pirata deserves props for being bold as fuck and refusing to fade into obscurity. So next time you’re scrolling Spotify looking for something different, throw this bad boy on. Just don’t blame me if it messes with your head—in the best possible way.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that the 1979 Brazilian album *Pirata* by A Barca Do Sol is like a musical treasure chest? It blends Folk Rock, Prog Rock, and Art Rock with Latin vibes, creating a sound that feels both worldly and deeply rooted in Brazil's culture. The band wore many hats—Nando Carneiro not only sang and played guitar but also handled piano and viola duties. And get this: the album has two versions of some tracks, like "Jardim de Infância" and "Tereza Boca Do Rio," as if they couldn’t decide which take was too good to leave behind! The artwork, done by Christiane Coelho, adds to its charm, making it a true piece of art inside and out.

Obs. No segundo parágrafo da resenha, o correto não seria "álbum menos conhecido" , ao invés de desconhecido? Mas entendi...
