Album Review: Intwenjani by Aba Shante If you’re into music that blends genres like it’s no big deal, then Intwenjani by Aba Shante is a gem worth checking out. Released in 1999 under ccp Record Company, this South African album mixes Electronic vibes with Folk, World, Country, and even Hip Hop beats. But what really ties it together is its Kwaito style—smooth, rhythmic, and just begging for your feet to move. Now, let me tell ya, I’ve had this album on repeat lately, and two tracks have stuck with me way more than the rest: “Vuk’ Uzenzele” and “Ng’ Funa Wena.” “Vuk’ Uzenzele” hits you right off the bat with its groove. It’s one of those songs where you think, “Oh, I’ll just listen once,” but before you know it, you’re vibing so hard you’ve forgotten what you were doing. The beat feels alive, like it has its own heartbeat. And the lyrics? They pull you in without even trying too hard. It’s catchy, but not in that annoying pop-song way—it’s deeper than that, almost like it’s telling you a story you didn’t realize you needed to hear. Then there’s “Ng’ Funa Wena,” which is pure energy bottled up in a track. This one’s got that Kwaito bounce that makes you wanna grab someone and dance, whether they want to or not (lol). The vocals are smooth, and the production gives off this chill yet hyped vibe at the same time. Honestly, every time it comes on, I find myself smiling like an idiot. There’s something about how raw and unfiltered it feels that reminds me why I love music in the first place. The rest of the album isn’t slacking either. Tracks like “Uthando Lwami” bring in some heartfelt moments, while “Vula’ Masango (Remix)” keeps things fresh with a little extra spice. Even the title track, “Intwenjani?” feels like a question you don’t mind asking over and over again. What makes Intwenjani stand out is how it doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than itself. You can tell Aba Shante poured their soul into this project, blending traditional sounds with modern twists in a way that feels both nostalgic and new. So yeah, if you’re looking for something different—something that’ll make you feel connected to South Africa’s vibrant music scene while also making you wanna dance like nobody’s watching—this is your album. Just don’t blame me when you can’t stop humming “Vuk’ Uzenzele” at work. Random thought: Listening to this album feels like finding an old mixtape in your car and realizing it’s still gold after all these years. Weird, right?
