Siouxsie & The Banshees - Shadowtime

Review by Kelly Sedinger

Shadowtime by Siouxsie & The Banshees: A Timeless Sonic Journey Released in 1991, Shadowtime is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It’s not loud or flashy, but it sticks to your soul like a shadow—quietly haunting, yet impossible to ignore. With its mix of Goth Rock, Indie Rock, and New Wave vibes, this record feels like a bridge between the band’s edgy past and their experimental future. And let’s be real, when you’ve got labels like Polydor, Geffen Records, and Wonderland backing you, you know something special’s brewing. The album kicks off with the title track, "Shadowtime," which hits hard right outta the gate. It’s moody, atmospheric, and dripping with Siouxsie Sioux’s signature icy vocals. The lyrics feel like they’re whispering secrets meant only for you. There’s this hypnotic rhythm to it—like walking through fog at midnight—and just when you think you’ve got it figured out, bam! The Eclipse Mix version flips everything on its head later in the album. That remix adds an extra layer of eeriness, almost as if the song grew legs and wandered into darker territory while no one was looking. I still can’t decide which version I prefer; both versions are unforgettable for different reasons. Then there’s “Sea Of Light,” a track that feels like floating underwater in slow motion. The guitar work here is just… wow. Dreamy doesn’t even cover it. This one always stands out because it feels less aggressive than some of the other tracks but still packs an emotional punch. When life gets overwhelming, throwing this song on somehow makes everything feel lighter—even if just for a few minutes. It’s weird how music can do that, right? What really ties the whole package together is the artwork and design (shoutout to Vichi Design and the band themselves). The visuals match the vibe perfectly—dark, mysterious, and kinda timeless. Plus, Donna Francesca’s photography adds another layer of intrigue. You can tell every detail was thoughtfully done, from the credits to the liner notes. Looking back, Shadowtime came out during a time when genres were blending more than ever before. Between the UK, US, Germany, and all over Europe, it seemed like everyone wanted a piece of Siouxsie & The Banshees’ magic. And honestly? They delivered. Here’s the thing though—this album isn’t perfect. Some tracks blend together after multiple listens, and maybe that’s okay. Maybe perfection would ruin the rawness of it all. Either way, Shadowtime reminds me why Siouxsie & The Banshees remain legends. They didn’t follow trends—they made their own rules. Final thought? If you listen closely enough, you might hear echoes of yourself in these songs. Or maybe that’s just my imagination playing tricks on me again. Who knows?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a fun fact: The album *Shadowtime* by Siouxsie & The Banshees is a bit of a genre chameleon. Released in 1991, it blends Goth Rock, Indie Rock, and New Wave into one moody yet catchy package. What’s cool is that the track "Shadowtime" got remixed as "Eclipse Mix," giving fans two versions to vibe with. Oh, and the artwork? It was a team effort between the band and Vichi Design—because who better to capture their aesthetic than the creators themselves?

Rarely do we fall in love with a woman without a good knowledge of her body. We assume it’s great but do we really care? Goddess!!!

Damn. We wasted a whole verse and chorus of Siouxsie strumming away. She 's way too captivating for that. Who's in charge here?
Dont any you fools see how stunning she looks in the white blouse?! Bunch of unperceptive Gen'xers and milinials...Bob at 65.

Another Stephen Hague masterpiece. The piano, guitar, electronic instruments all work in beautiful unison. You can see remnants of Pet Shop Boys in this awesome track.

The voice asleep, the voice has vanished
From the top of the sky to the place below
Touch the surface and the mirror bends
Your words resound, out of control
Freeze into time now
Still inside, yet doubt survives
It all begins, beneath the skin
No-one is near, no-one will hear
Your changeling song take shape
In Shadowtime
Turn your wish to a vapor, the silhouette fades
Eclipse your blue eyes, and the outline remains
From the house of the moon to the stars up above
Amidst the comets, first sight of love
So begins the countdown
Falling sky, a solar sigh
It all begins, beneath the skin
No-one is near, no-one will hear
Your changeling song takes shape
In Shadowtime
Shadowtime
Catching fire, taking hold
All that glisters leaves you cold
No-one is near, no-one will head
Your changeling song take shape
In Shadowtime
