Sheppard’s Bombs Away: A Pop-Rock Firecracker That Stuck With Me Let’s cut to the chase: Sheppard’s debut album Bombs Away (2015) is like a summer barbecue playlist that accidentally got too good. It's soft rock meets indie pop with just enough grit from alternative vibes to keep things interesting. And no, it’s not perfect—some tracks feel repetitive (seriously, how many versions of “The Best Is Yet To Come” do we need?), but when it works, boy does it work. Take “Geronimo,” for instance. You’ve probably heard this one at some frat party or gym class—you know, the tune everyone pretends they don’t know all the words to but secretly belts out in their car. The chorus hits like an energy drink spiked with glitter—it’s catchy as hell and impossible to ignore. What makes it stick? Maybe it’s George Sheppard’s raspy vocals layered over Amy Sheppard’s smooth harmonies, or maybe it’s the fact that yelling "GERONIMO!" feels oddly cathartic. Either way, it’s the kind of song you can’t unhear once it worms its way into your brain. Then there’s “Let Me Down Easy.” This track sneaks up on you like a puppy begging for scraps under the table—adorable yet kinda heartbreaking. The lyrics are simple enough ("I don’t wanna let you down"), but the melody builds so nicely that by the time the bridge rolls around, you’re practically ready to start a slow-motion montage of your own life. Jay Bovino deserves props here; his writing chops shine through even if he didn’t belt out the high notes himself. Plus, Stuart Stuart (yes, double trouble) nails the production, giving the whole thing a polished-but-not-overdone vibe. Now, about the rest of the album: it’s a mixed bag. Tracks like “Smile” and “Halfway To Hell” have moments where they shine brighter than others, while songs like “Pebble Road” make me wonder if they were included just to fill space. But hey, isn’t that what albums are supposed to be? A little messy, a lot personal, and full of experiments that sometimes miss? What really ties Bombs Away together is its global charm. Released across Indonesia, Europe, South East Asia, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan—you name it—it’s clear Sheppard wasn’t aiming small. And credit where it’s due: working with labels like Decca, Republic Records, and Chugg Music must’ve been wild. Like trying to wrangle cats who only speak different languages. So yeah, Bombs Away isn’t perfect. Some tracks feel like filler, and I still can’t figure out why “The Best Is Yet To Come” shows up three times. But damn if it doesn’t leave a mark. Listening to it feels like catching up with an old friend who tells great stories but occasionally repeats themselves after one too many beers. Final thought? If you ever find yourself stuck in traffic, crank this album loud enough to drown out the honking—and maybe roll down your window to yell “GERONIMO!” Just because you can.

About Sheppard

Sheppard is a Brisbane (Australia)-based indie-pop band. Originally formed in 2009 as a duo consisting of siblings Amy and George Sheppard, they expanded by adding Jay Bovino in April 2011 before reaching their current six-member state, including the third Sheppard sibling Emma. They have released two singles to date and one extended play under their own label entitled Empire of Song. Their second single "Geronimo" spent three weeks at number one, knocking Pharrell Williams' single "Happy" from the top spot after its 12-week run. "Geronimo" was accredited platinum by ARIA in April 2014.
