Review by Alistair Sutton

Album Review: Pictures At An Exhibition / Lieutenant Kije / The Love Of Three Oranges Man, if you’re into classical music that feels like it’s telling you a story without saying a word, this 1972 Decca release is something you gotta hear. We’ve got Mussorgsky and Prokofiev teaming up (well, not literally—they were from different times, but hey, let’s not split hairs). Throw in L’Orchestre De La Suisse Romande led by Ansermet, plus the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra under Boult, and what you get is an emotional rollercoaster wrapped in Romantic-era brilliance. Let me just say, when I first hit play on Pictures At An Exhibition, my brain went “whoa.” It’s one of those albums where every track feels like stepping into another world. But two tracks stuck with me hard—like, wouldn’t-leave-my-head-for-days kind of stuck. First off, there’s The Hut On Fowl’s Legs (Baba-Yaga). Holy smokes, this piece hits hard. Baba Yaga, for those who don’t know, is basically the scariest witch in Russian folklore, and Mussorgsky nails her vibe here. The orchestra goes full throttle—it’s chaotic, wild, and kinda makes your heart race. Like, imagine running through a dark forest while some creepy witch chases you on a chicken-legged house. Yeah, that’s the energy. Every time the brass section kicks in, it’s like BAM! You can almost see the sparks flying. I couldn’t help but grin like an idiot while listening because it’s so over-the-top dramatic—but in the best way possible. Then there’s Troika from Lieutenant Kije. Oh man, this one’s softer, dreamier—a total contrast to Baba-Yaga’s chaos. Prokofiev gives us this sleigh ride vibe, all jingling bells and smooth strings. It’s cozy as hell, like sipping hot cocoa by a fire while snow falls outside. But beneath that warmth, there’s this bittersweet undertone, like maybe the sleigh’s heading somewhere sad or far away. That mix of happy and melancholy feelings? Chef’s kiss. It’s the kind of music that sneaks up on you emotionally before you even realize it. What’s wild about this album is how it switches gears between these massive, larger-than-life moments and quieter, introspective ones. One minute you’re dodging witches; the next, you’re floating along on a magical winter ride. And honestly, isn’t life kinda like that too? So yeah, if you’re looking for classical music that doesn’t just sit pretty but actually grabs you by the feels, give this one a shot. Sure, it came out ages ago in ’72, and it’s Australian-imported goodness, but good music doesn’t care about time zones or decades. Just make sure you listen loud enough to catch all the details. Oh, random thought—I wonder if anyone’s ever made a video game soundtrack inspired by this album. Because seriously, someone should.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Pictures At An Exhibition, Lieutenant Kije, The Love Of Three Oranges* is like a musical time machine. It combines works by two Russian composers, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev, who lived in different eras but shared a knack for storytelling through music. Released in 1972 in Australia, it brings together orchestras from Switzerland and Paris, conducted by legends like Ansermet and Boult. One of the tracks, *The Hut On Fowl's Legs (Baba-Yaga)*, is based on a mythical witch from Slavic folklore who rides around in a mortar and pestle. So, you’re basically listening to a spooky fairy tale come to life. How wild is that?
