Egberto Gismonti - Alma

Album Review: Egberto Gismonti’s Alma Egberto Gismonti's Alma is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 1986, it blends Brazilian Folk, Latin Jazz, and Contemporary Jazz into something that feels both timeless and kinda outta place. It’s like sipping coffee at sunrise while someone plays guitar nearby—simple but deep enough to make you think about life for a sec. The mix of genres—Brazilian Traditions, Global Jazz, Samba—makes this record feel like a passport stamped all over with vibes from Germany, Brazil, and Japan. Labels like Carmo, EMI, and Bomba Records helped put it out there, and honestly? They knew what they were doing. Now let’s talk tracks because not every song hits the same way. First off, “Agua & Vinho” (or “Water & Wine”) sticks with me big time. I mean, how can you not get lost in its flow? It starts soft, almost like a lullaby, but then layers build up—piano notes here, synth whispers there—and suddenly you’re floating. It’s got this dreamy vibe that makes me wanna close my eyes and just breathe. Like, yeah, water and wine don’t usually go together, but somehow Gismonti pulls it off. You can tell he wrote this straight from the heart, no filter. Then there’s “Loro,” which is just pure magic. If “Agua & Vinho” feels like floating, “Loro” feels like dancing barefoot on warm sand. The rhythm grabs you by the hand and doesn’t let go. There’s so much energy packed into this track—it’s playful yet serious, kinda like watching a parrot squawk and strut around. And hey, props to Otto Dreshsler for recording most of these tunes; dude really nailed the sound quality. Every pluck of the guitar feels alive, like it could jump outta your speakers any second. One thing that stands out about Alma is how personal it feels. Gismonti composed nearly all the tracks himself, except for track 9 (“Cigana”), which was done by his brother Antonio. That family touch adds another layer of soul to the whole project. Plus, shoutout to Livio Campos for the photography—he captured some moodiness that matches the music perfectly. Even the liner notes by 中原仁 and ケペル木村 add an extra dash of global flair. Like, who expects Japanese commentary on a Brazilian jazz album? Not me, but I’m glad it’s there. By the end of the album, you realize Alma isn’t trying too hard to impress anyone. It’s more like a conversation between Gismonti and whoever’s listening. He’s sharing stories through melodies, mixing traditional Brazilian sounds with modern jazz twists. Tracks like “Frevo” and “Maracatú” bring the party, while others like “Ruth” keep things mellow and reflective. It’s messy in the best way possible, like a colorful collage where nothing quite matches but everything works anyway. So yeah, Alma might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you dig stuff that’s raw, emotional, and unapologetically unique, give it a spin. Honestly, after listening to it, I found myself wondering why more people aren’t talking about this gem. Maybe it’s too chill for today’s playlists or too complex for background noise. Either way, it deserves more love. Or maybe… just maybe… it’s better off staying underrated. Like a secret only cool people know about.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Egberto Gismonti's album *Alma*, released in 1986, is a beautiful mix of Brazilian traditions and global jazz influences? It’s like a musical bridge between cultures. Gismonti played multiple roles—composer, pianist, synthesizer wizard, and even editor. Fun fact: the track "Palhaço" (which means "Clown") shows his knack for blending humor and deep emotion through music. The Alma album reminds me so much of time spent in Brasil, Rafael Rabello, 7-string guitars, and delivering a 13-string guitar to Egberto, built by Mario Passos in Rio. Amazing times.
