Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops

Album Review: Braindrops by Tropical Fuck Storm Tropical Fuck Storm’s Braindrops is one of those albums that feels like it crawled out of the underbelly of 2019 with something to say—and not in a polite, sit-down kind of way. Released on Flightless and Joyful Noise Recordings, this record smashes together Alternative Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Art Rock, and a dash of Avantgarde chaos. The result? A gloriously messy, genre-defying beast that demands your attention. The band—RKO, Fi Fi, Gaz, and Hammer—alongside key collaborator JP Shilo (who adds violin, guitar, and organ on select tracks) create an experience that feels both cerebral and primal. It's noisy, experimental, and unapologetically raw, but there's also a strange beauty lurking beneath its jagged edges. Tracks like “Can’t Stop” and “Who’s My Eugene?” are unforgettable for different reasons, showcasing why this album sticks in your head long after the last note fades. “Can’t Stop” kicks things off with a relentless energy that grabs you by the collar. The song doesn’t just play—it assaults your senses. Gareth Liddiard’s production work here is stellar, capturing every gritty detail while keeping the cacophony coherent. The mix between punk blues and noise rock elements makes it feel like you’re listening to a live performance where anything could happen next. And honestly, isn’t that what great music should do? Keep you guessing? Then there’s “Who’s My Eugene?,” which gets stuck in your brain like gum on a hot day. Its hypnotic repetition paired with surreal lyrics creates a dreamlike state that borders on unsettling. JP Shilo’s contributions on violin and guitar add layers of texture, elevating the track from good to unforgettable. There’s a moment midway through when everything drops out except for a haunting drone—it’s jarring, yes, but also oddly satisfying, like scratching an itch you didn’t know you had. Artwork by Joe Becker perfectly encapsulates the vibe of Braindrops: chaotic yet deliberate, colorful yet dark. Mastering by Dav Byrne ensures the album sounds as wild as it looks, balancing clarity with controlled madness. Photography by Jamie Wdziekonski adds another layer of intrigue, making the whole package feel cohesive despite its experimental nature. What’s wild about Braindrops is how effortlessly it jumps across genres without ever losing its identity. Whether you’re into Neo-Psychedelia or straight-up Noise, there’s something here for everyone…well, almost everyone. If you prefer your music predictable and polished, this might not be your cuppa tea. But if you appreciate art that challenges you, pushes boundaries, and occasionally punches you in the face, then Tropical Fuck Storm has crafted something truly special. Here’s the kicker: listening to Braindrops feels like eavesdropping on a conversation happening somewhere deep inside the collective unconscious of Australia, the US, and the UK—all at once. It’s disorienting, exhilarating, and sometimes downright weird, but isn’t that exactly what we need more of in music today?

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: The album *Braindrops* by Tropical Fuck Storm is like a chaotic masterpiece. It blends so many genres—alternative rock, psychedelic rock, art rock, noise, and even punk blues—that it feels like a musical experiment gone gloriously right. One standout detail is that JP Shilo added layers of violin, guitar, and organ to only three tracks (5, 8, and 9), giving those songs a unique texture. And get this—the same song, "Who’s My Eugene?" appears multiple times on the tracklist, almost like the band is messing with your head. It’s wild, unpredictable, and totally unforgettable.

The Paradise for Straw Men"It's got some Looney Tunes biology, the planet of straw men, their only purpose is to disagree and do it publicly, amen. They're always going for the coup de grace, they think they're going to fuck a movie star but all paths lead to nowhere and it all adds up to nothing." Punk psychedelia, art punk, punk blues: call it what you wish but the music is brilliant. Braindrops is a very diverse album but everything on it belongs in the higher music spheres.
