Review by Cereni A Oliveira

Alright, let’s dive into this quirky little gem of an album: She’ll Be Comin’ Round The Mountain If They String Me Up by Bob Dyer and His Mountain Men, with Jimmie Revard & His Oklahoma Playboys. First off, it’s not every day you stumble across a hillbilly record from Australia on the Regal Zonophone label. Yeah, you heard that right—Australia. Weird, huh? But hey, music doesn’t care about borders, and neither do I. The title track, “She’ll Be Comin’ Round The Mountain,” is just plain fun. You know the tune—it’s one of those songs everyone kinda hums without even realizing it. This version though? It’s got this raw, rollicking energy that feels like a barn dance in full swing. The fiddle work is sharp as a tack, and there’s this loose, almost chaotic vibe to the whole thing that makes it feel alive. Like, you can practically smell the sawdust and spilled beer. It’s the kind of song that sticks in your head for days, whether you want it to or not. And honestly, I don’t mind. Sometimes simple is good, ya know? Then there’s “If They String Me Up.” Whoa, this one hits different. It’s darker, slower, and packs a punch emotionally. There’s something haunting about the way the lyrics play out—it’s like a twisted cowboy ballad. The harmonica adds this mournful edge, and Bob Dyer’s delivery is so earnest it almost hurts. I remember this track because it feels like the other side of the coin from the upbeat opener. One minute you’re tapping your feet, the next you’re sitting in a dusty corner, pondering life’s big questions. Heavy stuff for a hillbilly jam, but man, it works. What really gets me about this album is how unpolished it feels. These guys aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel—they’re just playing their hearts out. And yeah, sure, some of the recordings are a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. It’s real. No auto-tune, no studio magic—just good old-fashioned grit. So, here’s the kicker: listening to this record made me wonder if Bob Dyer ever got homesick. I mean, he’s over there in Australia, cranking out hillbilly tunes with a bunch of mates, far from the American roots of the genre. Did he miss the mountains? Or did he find new ones Down Under? Either way, he left us with a piece of music that still feels fresh decades later. Not bad for a guy who probably didn’t have Wi-Fi.

Keep that up and you'll do yourself an injury
Great country singing! When I was eight I lived with my father's youngest brother and five children during the first summer my mother went back to school to get her library science degree. They had a wind-up portable and one of the records was on Capitol--Just Thirteen Steps Away about a man facing the electric chair. It became my favorite and I always drove them crazy playing it. Through the years Charlotte and Mary Catherine would tease me about it!
