Chad Mitchell Trio - Blowin In The Wind In Action

Blowin’ In The Wind In Action: A Folk Gem That Still Resonates Let’s talk about Blowin’ In The Wind In Action by the Chad Mitchell Trio, because this 1963 album is one of those records that sneaks up on you. It doesn’t scream for attention—it whispers, strums, and hums its way into your heart. With its roots firmly planted in folk music, it’s got a vibe that feels like sitting around a campfire with friends who know how to tell stories without trying too hard. Now, here’s the thing—this album isn’t just some dusty relic from another era. Tracks like “Blowin’ In The Wind” (yeah, THAT song) and “The Ides Of Texas – And Don’t Fence Me In” are proof that good storytelling never goes out of style. Let me break it down for ya. First off, “Blowin’ In The Wind.” You’ve probably heard Dylan’s version enough times to have it etched into your brain forever. But the Chad Mitchell Trio? They bring something else entirely—a harmonious layering of voices that feels warmer, almost more intimate. It’s like they’re asking those big existential questions not at a protest rally but over coffee with an old friend. There’s no shouting or grandstanding; instead, there’s this quiet urgency that makes you stop and think. Why do we keep making the same mistakes? How many roads must a man walk down before he finds himself? Honestly, their take on it sticks with me because it’s less anthem, more meditation. And then there’s “The Ides Of Texas – And Don’t Fence Me In,” which is basically two songs stitched together in a way that shouldn’t work but totally does. One minute you’re riding through wide-open plains, feeling free as hell, and the next you’re knee-deep in political intrigue straight outta Shakespeare. I mean, what even IS that combo? Yet somehow, it clicks. Paul Prestopino’s banjo adds this lively bounce while Bruce Langhorne’s guitar gives it depth. It’s quirky, unexpected, and kinda brilliant—the kind of track that makes you grin every time you hear it. Backing all this up is a tight-knit crew of musicians who clearly love what they’re doing. Bassist Norman Keenan lays down grooves so smooth you barely notice ‘em until they’re gone, and Ernest Oelrich’s engineering captures every pluck and strum with crystal clarity. Even the liner notes by Gil McKean feel thoughtful, like someone took the time to explain why these songs matter without sounding pretentious. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album in 2023 feels weirdly relevant. Sure, it came out six decades ago, but themes like freedom, justice, and searching for meaning haven’t exactly gone out of fashion. If anything, they hit harder now. Maybe that’s why albums like Blowin’ In The Wind In Action refuse to fade away—they remind us where we’ve been, sure, but also where we still need to go. So yeah, if you’re looking for music that soothes AND challenges, give this one a spin. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming “Blowin’ In The Wind” days later or randomly quoting lines from “Ides Of Texas.” Oh, and here’s a random thought to leave you with: Did anyone else catch that Easter egg in “One Day When I Was Lost (Easter Morn)”? Feels like the trio snuck in a little wink somewhere between the verses. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, this album’s worth revisiting.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? The Chad Mitchell Trio's 1963 album *Blowin' In The Wind In Action* wasn’t just another folk record. It featured a mix of original tracks and covers, including their take on Bob Dylan’s iconic "Blowin’ In The Wind." But here’s the kicker—Bruce Langhorne, who played guitar on the album, was actually one of the inspirations for Dylan’s classic song "Mr. Tambourine Man." Langhorne often brought a large tambourine to recording sessions, catching Dylan's attention. So, in a way, this album connects two giants of folk music through a single musician. Pretty cool, huh?

Saw these guys twice at UNC in the 60s,that was the first time I heard Blowing in the Wind.Always liked their version best of all the other folk singers even though the Kingston Trio was my favorite group.I still love the Chad Mitchell Trio.

VERY strange to hear this song without the record noises. In the 90s a family friend even converted this album to CD for us, but the record scratches remained intact.

I saw them in Minneapolis. Was a fan ever after that. They were not the most famous, but they were the best.

nice loving the song bro.
Ahh, this is my favorite version of the song.  The way they are singing it makes it sound almost like an Irish folk song!

They became the Mitchell Trio before Chad left. SLIGHTLY IRREVERENT MITHCELL TRIO and TYPICAL AMERICAN BOYS were released by The Mitchell Trio while Chad was still a member.

Kapp Records' out of step decision was probably the reason the CMT moved to Mercury Records not long afterwards.

On this day in 1963 {March 17th} the Chad Mitchell Trio performed "Blowin' In The Wind" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
The Trio's version was never released as a single, but three months and twelve days later on June 29th it entered Bilboard's Hot Top 100 for the first time; Peter, Paul, and Mary took it #2 {for 1 week} and it spent 15 weeks on the Top 100...
R.I.P. Mary Travers {1936 - 2009}, Paul Stookey is 75, Peter Yarrow is 74, & Chad Mitchell was born in 1936 {birth day?}

Well, what do you know. Then PP&M quite simply improved on Dylan's harmonies, and made his tune more justice. :)

Surprisingly simple harmonics. I have to say that I missed the tonic parallel Cm on "down" and the dominant Bb on "man
When Chad Mitchell left the group a unknown singer by the name of John Deutschendorf aka John Denver joined the group and they bacame The Mitchell Trio. John Denver's career was launched.
