Album Review: Didn’t It Rain / You Got To Believe by Evelyn Freeman Alright, let’s talk about this little gem from 1962. Evelyn Freeman’s Didn’t It Rain / You Got To Believe is one of those records that sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t scream for attention, but once you give it a spin, it sinks its hooks in deep. Released under United Artists Records in France (yeah, France—stick that in your musical map), this Funk/Soul duo feels like a warm hug on a rainy day. And trust me, I mean that in the best way possible. First off, “Didn’t It Rain” hits hard right outta the gate. The track opens with this smoky groove that just oozes soul. Evelyn’s voice? Man, it’s smooth as butter melting over toast. She doesn’t overdo it; she lets the lyrics breathe, and they hit different because of it. There’s something raw yet polished about how she delivers lines like “didn’t it rain,” almost like she’s reminiscing while singing. You can feel the weight behind every word. This isn’t some cookie-cutter pop tune—it’s storytelling wrapped in melody. Honestly, after hearing it, you’ll find yourself humming it hours later without even realizing it. Then there’s “You Got To Believe.” If “Didn’t It Rain” is introspective, this one’s more like a pep talk set to music. T. Roberts and E. Freeman clearly knew what they were doing when they wrote this. The rhythm has this steady heartbeat vibe, like it’s daring you to get up and move. What sticks with me most is how Evelyn flips between soft persuasion and full-on conviction. One minute she’s whispering truths into your ear, the next she’s belting them out like she’s trying to wake up the whole neighborhood. By the end, you kinda do believe—whatever it is she wants you to. What makes these tracks stand out isn’t just their soulful sound—it’s how real they feel. These aren’t songs made to chase trends or fit playlists. They’re personal, intimate, like Evelyn’s sitting across from you at a dimly lit café, sharing her thoughts over coffee. Maybe that’s why they’ve stuck around all these years. So here’s the kicker: listening to an album like this reminds you how much we miss simplicity in music today. No auto-tune, no endless layers of production—just good ol’ soul pouring straight from the heart. And hey, who would’ve thought a French release could nail the essence of American soul so perfectly? Life’s funny like that sometimes. Final thought? If you stumble across this record, grab it. Not just for the music, but for the reminder that sometimes the simplest things leave the biggest mark. Oh, and maybe keep an umbrella handy—you might need it after all that rain.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: Evelyn Freeman’s album *Didn’t It Rain You Got To Believe* is a hidden gem from 1962. It blends soulful vibes with a funky edge, even though it came out in France, not the U.S. What’s wild is that it was released under United Artists Records, a label known more for films than music back then. The tracks “Didn’t It Rain” and “You Got To Believe” were penned by E. Freeman and T. Roberts. Pretty neat how this soul record found its way into the world from such an unexpected place!

This cut was often played on KPEN FM on a program showcasing sounds in FM stereo, back when that was new. I think James Gabbert was the host, often playing live recordings of trains, one of them featuring his E Jag's exhaust note as it powered away from the recording site. That would have been back in 1960 or 61, and I haven't heard this recording again until now. Back to my youth, soldering irons, and Heathkits.
