Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Works I

Review by Clare Pearson

Works I by Emerson, Lake & Palmer: A Genre-Bending Odyssey That Sticks With You Let’s get one thing straight—Emerson, Lake & Palmer weren’t messing around when they dropped Works I. This album is like a musical Frankenstein’s monster, stitched together from jazz, rock, classical, and who-knows-what-else. It’s proggy, it’s jazzy, it’s soft in places you didn’t expect, and honestly? It feels like listening to three mad scientists jamming in a castle somewhere in Germany (where the label Ariola gave this beast life). Now, let me tell ya about two tracks that burrowed into my brain and refused to leave. First up: “Toccata Con Fuoco.” Oh man, this one hits different. The third movement of the suite slaps so hard it might as well come with a warning label. Keith Emerson’s keyboard work here isn’t just playing—it’s declaring war on mediocrity. Imagine someone took Bach, shoved him into a time machine, and made him hang out with a 70s rock band. That’s what this track feels like. Every note screams precision but also chaos, like a perfectly choreographed bar fight. By the time Carl Palmer’s drums kick in full force, you’re not sure whether to nod your head or just stare at your speakers in awe. Either way, it sticks with you. Days later, I caught myself humming bits of it while brushing my teeth. Weird? Maybe. Awesome? Absolutely. Then there’s “C’est La Vie.” If “Toccata” is the wild child, this one’s the chill uncle who shows up unannounced with wine and stories. Greg Lake’s vocals are smooth as butter here, dripping with emotion without overdoing it. The melody has this bittersweet vibe, like watching an old movie where everyone looks impossibly cool but you know something tragic’s gonna happen. And those strings! They sneak up on you, wrapping around the song like a warm blanket. It’s the kind of track that makes you wanna sit by a window during rain, even if it’s blazing hot outside. Yeah, it’s cheesy, but damn if it doesn’t work. The rest of the album keeps the energy alive, though some tracks lean more toward mellow introspection (“Lend Your Love To Me Tonight”) or straight-up balladry (“Nobody Loves You Like I Do”). But hey, variety’s the spice of life, right? Even when things slow down, ELP never lose their knack for turning ordinary moments into something grandiose. Here’s the kicker, though. Listening to Works I feels less like hearing an album and more like witnessing a conversation between genres. Jazz argues with rock, classical interrupts with its fancy theories, and somehow, it all works. Sure, it can feel overwhelming at times—like being invited to a party where everyone’s smarter than you—but once you settle in, it’s unforgettable. So yeah, Works I isn’t perfect. Some parts drag, others go full-on pretentious, and yet… I can’t stop coming back to it. Maybe because it reminds me how music doesn’t have to fit neatly into boxes. Or maybe because, deep down, we all need a little chaos in our lives. Who knew German-label-backed prog rock could teach us that? Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and demand proof of human creativity, hand them this album. Then duck.

Dig those tympani at 1:06. Also at 6:46, if you listen carefully, theres an acoustic guitar that reminds me of the opening guitar riff in jim croces 'you dont mess around with jim' and dig also the coda at 9:29

Styx's Version of "Fanfare For The Common Man" is also excellent as well. Who's version is better, Styx's or ELP's (Emerson, Lake, & Palmer).

The melody returning just after 7:55 is absolutely brilliant; tying it back to the front-end and bringing it all home. What effort!

ELP's version of Aaron Copland's 1942 composition is brilliant. For a spectacular orchestra original version search Youtube for: Fanfare for the Common Man, New York Philharmonic, James Levine
