Review by Phil Doucette

Collective Soul’s 7even Year Itch: Greatest Hits 1994-2001 – A Rock Nostalgia Trip That Still Slaps Let’s cut to the chase: if you were alive in the '90s and didn’t at least hum along to Collective Soul, were you even really there? Their 7even Year Itch: Greatest Hits 1994-2001 is like a time machine that doesn’t need batteries—just hit play, and boom, you're back in flannel shirts and baggy jeans. Released in 2001 (yeah, technically Y2K-era but still riding that grunge-meets-alt-rock wave), this compilation spans their biggest bangers across continents from Australia to Argentina. And let’s be real, it’s packed with enough Pop Rock and Alternative Rock goodness to make your Spotify Wrapped jealous. Now, I’m not gonna sit here pretending every track slays equally—because who has time for that? But two songs on this bad boy have stuck with me harder than gum on a sneaker: Shine and Gel. Let me break it down for ya. “Shine” – The Anthem You Didn’t Know You Needed Oh, Shine. If this song doesn’t get your blood pumping, check your pulse—you might be part vampire. This was basically the unofficial soundtrack of every high school football game, road trip, or awkward slow dance where no one knew what they were doing. Ed Roland’s vocals are so earnest they could sell you life insurance, while Ross Childress’ guitar solo feels like someone handed him lightning bolts instead of strings. Fun fact: Ed wrote this sucker, and honestly, I think he bottled up all our mid-'90s angst into three minutes and forty seconds. Every time I hear it, I feel like grabbing an air guitar and rocking out in my kitchen. Or maybe crying. Both are valid reactions. “Gel” – Sticky Sweet Perfection Then there’s Gel, which is probably responsible for about 60% of my questionable teenage decisions. It’s moody, broody, and dripping with vibes that scream “I wear black eyeliner and only listen to bands you’ve never heard of.” The bassline by Will Turpin is smoother than butter on a hot biscuit, and when Ed sings “It giiiiives me chills,” well, same buddy. Same. What makes this track unforgettable isn’t just its catchy hooks; it’s how it perfectly captures that weird mix of vulnerability and bravado we all felt as teens. Plus, c’mon—it’s called Gel. How can you not love something named after hair product? --- Beyond these standouts, the album throws in some curveballs too, like Perfect Day (Featuring Elton John), because why not throw a legend into the mix? And sure, tracks like December and The World I Know tug at the heartstrings, but let’s face it—they’re more background music for staring wistfully out rain-streaked windows. What strikes me most about 7even Year Itch is how unapologetically itself it is. No overproduced nonsense, no desperate attempts to chase trends—just solid rock tunes made by dudes who clearly loved their craft. Credit goes to Ed Roland wearing almost as many hats as Pharrell (producer, writer, vocalist, keyboard wizard—you name it) and the rest of the band for keeping things tight. Shoutout also to Tom Lord-Alge for mixing those standout tracks and making them sound crisp enough to rival fresh laundry. --- So yeah, whether you’re reliving the glory days or discovering Collective Soul for the first time, this album holds up better than most of us care to admit. Listening to it now feels like catching up with an old friend who still cracks the same dumb jokes but somehow gets cooler with age. Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and demand proof of human creativity, I’m handing them this album. Either they’ll dig it, or we’ll go out swinging to Shine. Either way, win-win. Rating: 8.5/10 – Solid gold, with a side of sticky Gel.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool fact: Collective Soul’s *7even Year Itch Greatest Hits 1994–2001* features a collaboration with none other than Elton John. The track "Perfect Day (Featuring Elton John)" stands out as a special bonus on the album. It’s not every day you see a rock band team up with a legendary pop icon like that! The album itself is a mix of their biggest hits and some new recordings, showcasing their signature blend of pop rock and alternative rock. Fun, right?

Whoa I was trying to remember where I first heard this song and I realized that it was a little song that would play on this fake electric guitar my brother used to own as a kid... such nostalgia.

Heard it on the radio today, recognized it, but didn't remember what it was called, Googled the lyrics, led me here. This is basically my routine. The interesting thing with music is when you break down what it basically is, sound itself is vibration and your eardrums send signals to the brain to let you know what it sounds like, so that means music is vibration that your brain likes.

The tuning is off - the whole song is a bit sharp. To my ear, this song was in C#... but this upload has the song somewhere between C# and D. It still sounds fine on its own, but you can't play along with any instrument in standard 440 tuning.
