Review by Peter Hoefgen

Blues with a Kick: A Look at TNT Tribble’s Volume 2 TNT Tribble’s Volume 2 is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 1990 under the Collectables label, this U.S.-born gem blends Blues and Rhythm & Blues with a raw energy that feels like it was recorded live in someone’s basement—except way better. It’s not trying too hard to impress, which is kinda why it works. The tracklist reads like a jukebox playlist from another era, but two songs stuck out for me: “Red Hot Boogie” and “Cadillac Blues.” Let’s start with “Red Hot Boogie.” This tune grabs you by the collar right from the first note. The guitar riffs are sharp enough to cut glass, and the rhythm section bounces along like an old Cadillac cruising down a country road. You can almost picture the band sweating it out onstage as they play this one—it’s messy in all the right ways. Then there’s “Cadillac Blues,” a slower burn that lets you sink into its groove. The lyrics paint vivid pictures of freedom and heartache tied together by shiny chrome and roaring engines. It’s got this lazy swagger that makes you wanna lean back and sip something cold while nodding your head. Not every blues song can pull off being both reflective and danceable, but this one nails it. Other tracks like “She Walked Right In” and “Movin’ Man” keep the momentum going without overstaying their welcome. Even the instrumental bits, like “T.N.T. Stroll/Good Mama Instrumental,” add texture without feeling like filler. And honestly, who doesn’t love a little variety? What really struck me about Volume 2 is how unpretentious it feels. There’s no overproduction or glossy sheen here—just good ol’ fashioned musicianship doing what it does best. Sure, some transitions feel a bit rough around the edges, but that only adds to its charm. It’s like hanging out with an old friend who tells great stories even if they stumble over their words sometimes. In the end, TNT Tribble’s Volume 2 reminds us why we fell in love with bluesy R&B in the first place. It’s real, it’s gritty, and it’s damn fun. Oddly enough, listening to it made me think about how music today could use more imperfection. Maybe we’ve polished things so much we’ve forgotten how cool it is when stuff isn’t perfect. Anyway, crank this up next time you need a soundtrack for life’s little moments—you won’t regret it.
