Haydn’s "Surprise" and "Clock" Symphonies: A Timeless Treat by the London Philharmonic Orchestra Alright, let’s talk about this gem of a record. Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major ("Surprise") and Symphony No. 101 in D Major ("Clock"), performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Eugen Jochum, is one of those albums that just sticks with you. It’s not flashy or over-the-top—it’s pure, unadulterated classical goodness. And honestly? Sometimes that’s all you need. First off, let’s dive into the 2nd Movement: Andante from Symphony No. 94—the infamous “Surprise” movement. If you’re new to classical music, this track is like your gateway drug. The whole thing starts off super chill, with these delicate strings softly lilting along. You might even find yourself nodding off (no judgment here). But then—BAM! Outta nowhere comes this thunderous chord that feels like someone sneaking up on you at night. It’s cheeky, it’s playful, and honestly? I think Haydn was trolling us back in the 1700s. Every time I hear it, I can’t help but smile. It’s like he knew exactly what he was doing—keeping sleepy aristocrats awake during concerts. Genius. Now onto the 3rd Movement: Menuet (Allegro Molto) - Trio - Menuet from Symphony No. 101, aka the "Clock" symphony. This one’s got personality for days. There’s something about the ticking rhythm in the background—it’s hypnotic, man. Like listening to an old grandfather clock while sipping tea in some posh British parlor. But don’t get too comfy because the trio section swoops in with this warm, almost folksy feel. It’s like Haydn decided to throw a little countryside vibe into the mix, which totally works. I remember humming this bit for hours after my first listen—it’s sticky like that. Eugen Jochum nails the conducting here. He doesn’t mess around; his direction lets the London Philharmonic shine without overshadowing Haydn’s brilliance. The orchestra sounds tight but still full of life, like they’re having fun rather than just going through the motions. Deutsche Grammophon did their thing with the recording quality too—it’s crisp enough to make you feel like you’re sitting right there in the concert hall. Here’s the kicker though: as much as we love talking about Haydn being clever and witty, there’s something oddly comforting about how timeless this music feels. Listening to these symphonies now, hundreds of years later, reminds me how art really does transcend eras. Plus, who else thought naming symphonies after clocks and surprises was kinda quirky? Dude had a sense of humor. So yeah, if you’re looking to dip your toes into classical music—or just want something classy playing in the background while pretending to read Tolstoy—grab this album. Just don’t blame me when that surprise chord makes you spill your coffee.

About Haydn, London Philharmonic Orchestra Conducted By Eugen Jochum

Born: 1732-03-31 (Rohrau, Austria) Born 31 march or 1st April, 1732. Died: 1809-09-05 (Vienna, Austria). Franz Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He brings the "sonata form" to a very high degree of improvement. His symphonies and his string quartets (forms of which he is considered "the father") have become highly inspirational style models. Haydn made a fundamental contribution to the development of chamber music; thanks to the numerous quartets, trios for piano, for strings and also with the unusual trios for baryton, viola and cello.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? Haydn's "Symphony No. 94 in G Major," nicknamed the "Surprise Symphony," got its name from a sudden, loud chord in the otherwise quiet second movement. It’s said Haydn added this little jolt to wake up sleepy audience members during concerts! This iconic piece is part of an album featuring the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Eugen Jochum. The same record also includes another masterpiece, "Symphony No. 101 in D Major," known as the "Clock Symphony" for its ticking rhythm. Both symphonies showcase Haydn’s genius and humor, making classical music anything but boring.
