Traxman - So Damm Whattt

Review by Loris Righetto

So Damm Whattt by Traxman: A Juke Odyssey That Still Slaps in 2023 Traxman’s So Damm Whattt isn’t just another juke album—it’s a wild ride through the frenetic, pulse-pounding energy of Chicago’s dance underground. Released back in 2013 via Interscape Records Limited, this record is like a time capsule that somehow feels as fresh today as it did a decade ago. With production handled by Cornelius Ferguson (aka Traxman himself) and mastering duties split between him and DJ Paypal, every track bursts with raw energy. And let’s not forget Elizabeth Arkhipsoff’s sleek design work—this thing looks as sharp as it sounds. Juke music thrives on its ability to make you move without overthinking, and So Damm Whattt nails that vibe perfectly. Tracks like “Ohh Wahhh” and “War On Mars” are standouts for different reasons, but both stick in your head long after the beat drops. “Ohh Wahhh” kicks things off with an infectious bounce that grabs hold of your body before your brain even knows what hit it. The chopped-up vocals swirl around punchy snares and basslines sharp enough to cut glass. It’s one of those tracks where you can practically feel the sweat dripping off the walls at some late-night warehouse party. When DJ LP hops on the remix version (“Oh Wahhh (feat. DJ LP)”), he adds another layer of chaos, turning up the intensity while keeping the groove locked tight. This tune sticks because it doesn’t just play—it commands attention. Then there’s “War On Mars,” which flips the script entirely. Instead of relentless hype, this one leans into a darker, more atmospheric vibe. The synths have an almost sci-fi edge, like you’re floating weightlessly through space while still nodding your head. When DJ Fred jumps on the remix (“War On Mars (feat. DJ Fred)”), his touch brings out even more depth, adding layers of texture that pull you deeper into the mix. If “Ohh Wahhh” makes you want to jump up and dance, “War On Mars” keeps you rooted in place, hypnotized by its eerie beauty. The rest of the album follows suit, blending high-octane bangers with moments of introspective chill. Standout cuts like “Extaceee” and “Funky Frog” showcase Traxman’s knack for crafting beats that feel both experimental and accessible. Meanwhile, collaborations with DJs like Rome and Fred prove how much chemistry exists within this crew. Every track has its own personality, yet they all fit together like pieces of a puzzle. What’s crazy about So Damm Whattt is how unapologetically itself it is. There’s no attempt to water down the juke formula for mainstream appeal; instead, Traxman doubles down on everything that makes the genre special. It’s messy, chaotic, and utterly irresistible—a perfect snapshot of a sound that refuses to sit still. Reflecting on this album years later, I’m struck by how timeless it feels. In a world obsessed with polished perfection, So Damm Whattt reminds us that sometimes the best art comes from letting loose and embracing imperfection. Oh, and here’s the unexpected part: listening to this album feels less like hearing music and more like stepping into a living, breathing organism. Weird? Maybe. Accurate? Absolutely.
