Foxhole by Television: A Witty Spin on a Rock Gem Alright, let’s talk about Foxhole, the sophomore effort from Television that dropped in 1978. It’s one of those albums you either stumble upon at a thrift store or hear blasting out of someone’s vintage record player while they sip artisan coffee and pretend they’re cooler than you. Spoiler alert: they probably are. Genre-wise, we’re talking Rock with a capital R, but don’t go expecting your dad’s classic rock here. Nope, this is New Wave meets Alternative Rock—sharp, angular, and dripping with attitude. The UK-born release via Elektra feels like it was carved out of raw city grit. And credit where it’s due: Tom Verlaine (who also wrote the tracks) and producer John Janson didn’t just phone this one in. They crafted something weirdly timeless, even if it wasn’t exactly chart-topping material back then. Now, onto the meat and potatoes—or should I say vinyl grooves? Two tracks stand out for me: “Careful” and “Foxhole.” Let’s break ‘em down. “Careful” kicks things off with a vibe that screams, “Hey, I’m mysterious and moody, but also kinda fun!” Verlaine’s guitar work is all over the place in the best way possible—like he couldn’t decide between being chill or going full-on shredder mode, so he did both. The rhythm section locks in tight, giving the whole thing an almost hypnotic pulse. You can practically see the smoky dive bar where this track would’ve been the perfect soundtrack to some late-night existential crisis. Or maybe just a really awkward first date. Then there’s the title track, “Foxhole.” This one hits different. It’s got layers, man. Layers of jangly guitars, cryptic lyrics, and enough tension to make you squirm in your seat. There’s something about the way Verlaine sings “foxhole” like it’s both a refuge and a trap—it sticks with you. Like gum on your shoe or that one embarrassing memory you wish you could un-remember. By the time the song winds down, you’re left wondering what the heck just happened, but damn if it doesn’t feel important. The production deserves a shout-out too. Lacquer cut by Allen? Mastered by Allen? Whoever this guy is, he clearly knew his stuff. The sound is crisp without losing that raw edge, which is no small feat for ‘78. Hats off to him—and to Verlaine and Janson for steering the ship. So, why does Foxhole stick in my brain? Maybe it’s because it doesn’t try too hard to be likable. It’s not chasing trends or pandering to anyone. Instead, it feels like a snapshot of four dudes doing their own thing, consequences be damned. That kind of authenticity is rare these days, unless you count TikTok influencers pretending to be “real.” Final thought: If Foxhole were a person, it’d probably wear leather jackets, smoke unfiltered cigarettes, and quote poetry at parties. But deep down, it’d have a heart of gold. Or maybe copper. Either way, it’s worth spinning at least once—preferably on a rainy day when life feels as messy as the music sounds. Oh, and hey—if you ever meet Allen, tell him thanks for making sure this album still slaps decades later.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool tidbit: The album *Foxhole* by Television is often overlooked, but it’s a hidden gem from the late '70s rock scene. Released in 1978 in the UK, it blends New Wave and Alternative Rock with raw energy. What makes it special? Tom Verlaine, the band’s frontman, not only wrote the tracks but also co-produced the album. It includes just two songs—"Careful" and "Foxhole"—but each track feels like a journey. Fun fact: Allen handled both the lacquer cut and mastering, giving the record a unique, polished sound.

Thanks for posting this song. I watched CBGB movie a couple of months ago and realized that during the 70's I missed out on a whole genre of music. Anyway I'm just being grateful. Thanks again. "I don't care, either, Careful."

This... sounds... WORSE than the Eagles? Say why was this band so revered? SUUUPER dated corporate rock backup vocals... not to mention HORRIBLE lead vocals. Everything terrible about the 70s in one band. Fuck. This is about as overproduced and unoriginal as Journey and Foreigner and THATS SAYING SOMETHING.

I don't get it? Why was this band considered so original? This whole album just sounds like retreads of 60s rock done horribly not to mention produced and sung HORRIBLY.
It's like the Rolling Stones replicated by 12 year olds in a garage recorded with a calculator.

You can tell loads of 2000's indie bands got influence from Television, that 'foxhole, foxhole!' chant could be from a Franz Ferdinand record
