Greg Phillinganes - Significant Gains

Significant Gains by Greg Phillinganes: A Funky, Soulful Stroll Down Memory Lane Let’s cut to the chase—Greg Phillinganes’ Significant Gains is one of those albums that sneaks up on you like an old friend who still owes you $20 but brings great stories instead. Released in 1981 (yeah, slap some bell-bottoms on and cue the disco ball), this record straddles genres like it’s nobody’s business: funk, soul, jazz-funk, even a dash of contemporary R&B for good measure. It’s smooth, it’s groovy, and honestly? It feels like a warm hug from someone wearing really nice cologne. Now, let’s dive into two tracks that’ll stick to your brain like gum under a barstool: First off, we’ve got "Takin' It Up All Night." Man, this track is pure energy bottled up in vinyl form. The synths are bouncy enough to make your grandma want to boogie, while Phillinganes’ lead vocals glide over the rhythm section like butter melting on hot toast. Raymond Pounds’ drumming? Tight as a pair of jeans after Thanksgiving dinner. This song doesn’t just ask you to dance—it demands it. You could be sitting at home doomscrolling through Instagram, and suddenly this tune comes on, and BAM—you’re twirling around your living room like nobody’s watching. Or maybe everybody is because, hey, curtains are expensive. Then there’s "I Don't Want To Be The One," which flips the vibe entirely. If “Takin’ It Up” is the life of the party, this track is the quiet corner where deep conversations happen. Phillinganes lays down some serious soul here, his voice dripping with emotion like syrup on pancakes. The arrangement is lush without being over-the-top—a little bit of keys here, a sprinkle of synth there, and boom, you’ve got yourself a slow jam worthy of late-night drives or staring wistfully out rain-speckled windows. Pro tip: don’t listen to this one if you’re already feeling sentimental unless you want to cry in your car. What makes Significant Gains stand out isn’t just its genre-blurring sound; it’s how personal it feels. Phillinganes wears his heart on his sleeve throughout these tracks, whether he’s belting out love ballads or getting folks onto the dance floor. And can we talk about Kosh’s art direction? That cover screams ‘80s cool—a perfect match for the vibe inside. So yeah, Significant Gains might not have been the biggest hit when it dropped, but it’s aged better than most things from the early ‘80s (looking at you, neon leg warmers). Listening to it now feels like rediscovering an underrated gem hiding in plain sight. Final thought? Life’s too short not to crank up tunes like this once in a while. Just promise me you won’t try spinning “Takin’ It Up All Night” during a Zoom meeting. Trust me on that one.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: Greg Phillinganes' album *Significant Gains* from 1981 is a hidden gem that blends Funk, Soul, Jazz, and even Disco. It’s wild how one person can wear so many hats—Greg didn’t just play keyboards and synths; he also sang lead vocals and produced the whole thing! The album was released in the US and Japan, with some big names behind it, like Planet Records and Sony. Fun fact: there are multiple versions of the same track listed, like "Takin' It Up All Night" and "I Don't Want to Be the One," which might hint at different edits or mixes. And get this—the artwork was handled by Kosh, a legendary designer known for his iconic style. It’s almost like holding a piece of music history in your hands.

When this song came out, and I do remember when it first hit the airwaves, I lost it, went crazy for this simple sounding tune. This is actually a pefect record, great melodies, great lyrics, great beat, and ofcourse, a soulful voice like greg phillinganes, this man has written songs for some of the greatest artists of our time, including the King of pop himself, Mike Jackson. This song is very special to me, and brings back to life all kinds of ol' school memories. This tune will be treasured forever.

It lacks something... For a musician of his caliber its very flat, plain, I am not impressed. He is a fantastic keyboardist, but it doesn't show he has improved from Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson. Another act like him who should be given as much credit as Phillinganes is Bill Wolfer they are two who have worked with the greats

What the song mostly lacks, Chromosom,  is your fair and understanding  reception of it.  In 1981, when this was released,  Phillinganes was a young artist in the throes of musical growth.  This was his first outing as a solo artist--quite ambitious, considering  covers of Rogers and Hammerstein's  "I Have Dreamed" from the 1951 musical, "The King And I" and a great introduction of a Donald Fagen song, "Lazy Nina." Growth is a personal thing--doesn't matter that he'd already played with Stevie Wonder and the Jacksons when he recorded thi; it was up to him to push forward, which is what he was attempting to do with this project. The album was not only very good for its time, but the choice of material is still more adventurous than what many acts dare today.  And to compare him to Bill Wolfer simply because they both are keyboardists with backgrounds in session work, makes no sense.
