Men Without Hats - Moonbeam

Moonbeam by Men Without Hats: A Retro-Futuristic Joyride That Still Glows Alright, let’s get one thing straight—Moonbeam isn’t your average synth-pop album. Released in 1969 (wait, what?!), this record is like stepping into a time machine where the past meets some alternate neon-lit future. Yeah, you heard me right. It’s got that weird mix of punky energy, danceable beats, and enough keyboard wizardry to make you feel like you’re floating through space while also trying not to spill your drink on the disco floor. First off, can we talk about “Moonbeam (Beam Me Up Version / Extended Vocal)” for a sec? This track hits hard. Like, really hard. You know those songs where it feels like they just handed all their emotions over to a synthesizer? That’s this one. The vocals are so raw and layered—you can tell these guys weren’t messing around when they wrote it. And the build-up? Oh man, it’s like waiting for fireworks on New Year’s Eve. When everything finally explodes into this euphoric wave of sound, you just wanna grab someone by the shoulders and scream, “THIS IS IT!” But instead, you end up dancing awkwardly because who cares if anyone’s watching? And then there’s “Dub Beam.” If “Moonbeam” is the heart of the album, “Dub Beam” is its soul—or maybe its weird cousin hiding out in the basement. It’s darker, grittier, more experimental. Listening to it feels like wandering through an abandoned warehouse at night with nothing but strobe lights flickering overhead. There’s something hypnotic about how the bassline pulses under glitchy edits and chopped-up vocals. Honestly, I think I could listen to this track forever without getting bored. Every time I hear it, I notice something new—a little echo here, a strange beat drop there. It’s sneaky good. Now, let me take a sec to appreciate the sheer chaos of the tracklist itself. With multiple versions of “Moonbeam,” including radio edits, extended mixes, and even a cappella takes, it’s clear the band didn’t want to leave any creative stone unturned. Some might call it overkill, but honestly? It works. Each version gives you another angle on the same story, like looking at a sculpture from different sides. Plus, it shows how much love went into crafting every single note. What really gets me though is how timeless this whole thing feels. Sure, it came out in ’69, but damn—it doesn’t sound dated. Maybe it’s the blend of genres: Synth Pop meets New Wave meets Punk/New Wave meets Italo-Disco meets whatever-the-hell-else-they-threw-in-there. Or maybe it’s just the fact that Men Without Hats poured their freakin’ hearts into this project. Either way, it’s special. So yeah, Moonbeam. An absolute gem that somehow manages to be both nostalgic and ahead of its time. Listening to it makes me wonder…if aliens ever do beam us up, will they play this as our welcome anthem? Because honestly, it’d fit. Now excuse me while I go blast “Dub Beam” again and pretend I’m living in a sci-fi movie.
