Alton Ellis Bubba Sparks - Slow Groover

Review by Jeremy Gooch

Alright, let’s dive into Slow Groover by Alton Ellis and Bubba Sparks. This album's got that cool mix of Reggae and Hip Hop vibes with a big ol’ Dancehall swagger—straight outta Jamaica, you feel me? It’s on the Stinger label, which kinda fits because this thing stings in all the right ways. First up, “Ugly Remix.” Man, this track is wild. Like, who’d think calling someone ugly could sound so smooth? The beat hits hard but stays chill at the same time—it’s one of those tracks where you don’t know whether to dance or just sit back and nod your head. The lyrics are playful yet kinda deep if you really listen. You can tell Alton and Bubba had fun messing around with this one. It sticks in my brain not ‘cause it’s perfect, but ‘cause it’s different. Ain’t every day you hear a diss track that makes you wanna move. Then there’s the title track, “Slow Groover.” This one’s smoother than butter on a hot biscuit. It’s got that slow-burn reggae rhythm that pulls you in like quicksand. By the second verse, I was hooked. There’s something about how they layer the vocals over the bassline—it feels like summer nights in Kingston, even if you’re stuck in some cold city apartment. Honestly, it’s the kinda song that makes you forget what you were stressing about five minutes ago. The whole vibe of Slow Groover is raw and real, no shiny polish here. And honestly? That’s why it works. These guys didn’t try too hard to impress; they just made music that feels alive. Funny thing though—listening to this album made me realize how much we need more mashups like this. Reggae meets Hip Hop shouldn’t work as well as it does, but dang, when it clicks, it’s magic. Makes me wonder why more artists ain’t jumping on this wave. Anyway, check it out if you want tunes that slap without trying too hard. Just don’t blame me if “Ugly Remix” gets stuck in your head for days!
