Annie Lennox - Sing

Annie Lennox – Sing: A Genre-Bending Odyssey That Sticks With You If you’ve ever wondered what happens when an artist throws every musical style they’ve got into a blender, Annie Lennox’s 2006 album Sing is your answer. It’s not just an album—it’s more like a global jukebox on steroids. From gospel to garage house, African vibes to progressive pop rock, this thing has layers upon layers of sound that feel both chaotic and oddly cohesive. Released everywhere from the US to Japan, it’s clear Lennox wasn’t trying to fit neatly into one box here. And honestly? Good for her. Let me start with the title track, “Sing.” There are so many versions of this song on the album (seriously, like 50 remixes), but the one that really stuck with me was the Nitin Sawhney Remix. It’s stripped back in places where other mixes go wild, letting Lennox’s voice shine through without drowning it in beats. Her vocals have this raw, almost haunting quality—like she’s whispering secrets straight into your soul. Paired with Sawhney’s subtle production choices, which weave in hints of Indian classical music, it becomes something completely hypnotic. I found myself hitting replay over and over, getting lost in its strange beauty. Then there’s the inclusion of “Why,” a live recording from Live 8. Now, I’ll admit, I’m not usually someone who gets emotional over concert footage or interviews included on albums, but this version hits different. Hearing Lennox belt out those powerhouse notes against the backdrop of such a massive event makes it feel urgent, alive. You can practically hear the crowd holding their breath before erupting into applause. It’s messy in parts—the audio isn’t perfect—but maybe that’s why it works. It feels real, unfiltered, human. What strikes me most about Sing is how unapologetically ambitious it is. Some tracks lean heavy into dancefloor-ready house beats (Harry Choo Choo Romero Club Mix, anyone?), while others strip everything down to bare bones. The mix of genres could easily come off as disjointed, but somehow, Lennox pulls it off. Maybe it’s because at its core, this album isn’t about sticking to one genre—it’s about storytelling. Whether she’s singing about resilience, love, or social justice, each track carries weight. Even the random interview snippets sprinkled throughout give you a sense of intimacy, like you’re sitting across from Lennox herself, hearing her thoughts firsthand. Oh, and let’s talk about the credits for a sec. Mastered by Ted Jensen, mixed by Tom Lord-Alge, produced by Glen Ballard—the list goes on. These folks know their stuff, and it shows. Every layer of sound feels intentional, even if it doesn’t always make immediate sense. And props to Mike Stevens for arranging some of the more experimental moments. Without his touch, the African-inspired interludes might’ve fallen flat. But here’s the kicker: despite all the glitz and polish, Sing feels deeply personal. It’s not just an album; it’s a patchwork quilt stitched together from Lennox’s life experiences, influences, and passions. Sure, it’s a little overwhelming at times—kinda like walking into a room packed with people speaking different languages—but once you tune in, it’s hard to turn away. So yeah, Sing might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you’re looking for an album that challenges you, moves you, and leaves you humming tunes long after the last note fades, this might just be it. Just don’t blame me if you end up Googling “How to DJ” after listening to all those remixes. Trust me, it happens.

I just found this song and I heard a very familiar voice on it, which I was almost certain it was Madonna. Wasn't I right though?
