The Essential Barry Manilow: A Retro Powerhouse That Still Slaps in 2005 Alright, let’s get one thing straight—Barry Manilow isn’t just some guy with a piano and a dream. Dude’s got layers. And "The Essential Barry Manilow," released back in 2005, is basically his victory lap through decades of soft rock, disco vibes, and ballads so emotional they could make your grandma cry at a wedding. This double-disc beast spans genres like Electronic, Pop/Rock, Funk/Soul, and Adult Contemporary while throwing punches from South Africa to Europe and everywhere in between. Labels like Arista, Legacy, and Sony Music clearly knew what they were doing when they slapped this together. Now, I’m not gonna lie—some tracks on here are pure cheese (in the best way possible). But two songs stood out for me, and honestly? They’re worth the price of admission alone. First up: "Copacabana (At The Copa)". Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it before. It’s played at every karaoke bar where drunk uncles think they’re singers. But listen closely this time. That long version? It’s got legs. The drama! The horns! The story about Lola fading into obscurity while Barry belts his heart out—it’s like a mini-movie packed into six minutes. You can practically smell the sequins and spilled drinks at the club. It’s over-the-top but somehow still hits different. Every time that bassline kicks in, I forget I’m sitting in my car eating fast food. Suddenly, I’m living my best life, dancing under neon lights. Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Then there’s "I Write the Songs". Look, I’ll admit it—I rolled my eyes the first hundred times I heard this track. How many people have butchered it at talent shows? Too many. But then I realized something: Barry didn’t even write this song. IRONIC, right?! Once you get past that fun fact, though, the magic happens. The single edit is tight, punchy, and dripping with nostalgia. It’s the kind of anthem that reminds you why radio pop ruled in its heyday. Plus, hearing Barry belt “I am music” gives me chills every damn time. Like, who ELSE could pull off those high notes without sounding ridiculous? No one. That’s who. Let’s talk production real quick. Barry himself produced most of these tracks, which explains why everything feels cohesive despite being pulled from all over his career. Credits go out to Jim Steinman (yeah, THAT Jim Steinman) for adding extra bombast to certain cuts, and Tony Moran bringing the heat on remixes like “I’m Your Man (Club Mix).” These guys weren’t messing around—they wanted hits, and boy, did they deliver. But here’s the kicker. Listening to this album feels like flipping through an old photo album. Some pictures are faded, sure, but others jump off the page. Tracks like “Mandy,” “Weekend In New England,” and “Could It Be Magic” aren’t just songs—they’re memories wrapped in melody. Barry might be singing about love and heartbreak, but really, he’s soundtracking our lives. So yeah, "The Essential Barry Manilow" isn’t perfect. There’s filler, repetition, and enough ballads to drown in if you’re not careful. But damn if it doesn’t work as both a greatest hits collection AND a reminder of why we fell in love with this guy in the first place. He’s cheesy, yes, but also kinda genius. Final thought: If aliens landed tomorrow and asked us to explain human emotion through music, we’d hand them this album. Then again, maybe we’d throw in some Kid Creole & The Coconuts for good measure. Either way, Barry wins. Always does.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know? Barry Manilow's *The Essential Barry Manilow* album, released in 2005, is like a musical time capsule. It spans decades of his career, blending genres like Pop, Soul, and Disco. What’s wild is that Barry himself produced most of the tracks, but he also teamed up with some big names—like Jim Steinman, the genius behind Meat Loaf’s *Bat Out of Hell*, for one track. Oh, and it’s not just a US thing; this album dropped in places like South Africa, Europe, and Mexico too. It even includes multiple versions of some songs, like *Can’t Smile Without You* and *Copacabana*. Talk about giving fans every possible vibe!

So, let's think this:: the history is sad, if you put this, on a kind rhythm, people will more cry than hear the song. Sad things, nobody likes to remember. I guess, it was song singing about a girl that was a dancer. Good rhythm.

Did… Did anybody else not realize the Star Wars Cantina song by Richard Cheese was a parody of this song? Thought it was an original melody all this time…
