Album Review: 16 Country Guitar Greats by Bert Weedon (1978) If you’re a fan of country music with a touch of British charm, 16 Country Guitar Greats by Bert Weedon is worth a spin. Released in 1978 on Polydor, this album doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel—it’s just good ol’ country vibes played with heart and soul. Bert Weedon, who wore multiple hats as the arranger and guitarist here, brings his signature warmth to these timeless tunes. Chris Harding produced it, while Peter Olliff made sure everything sounded crisp. It’s not flashy, but sometimes simple works best. The tracklist reads like a love letter to classic country hits—songs that have been covered so many times they feel like old friends. Two tracks stuck out for me personally: “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” “Rhinestone Cowboy” has always had this swagger about it, you know? Weedon keeps Glen Campbell’s original energy alive but adds his own flair with some smooth guitar licks. You can almost picture him in the studio, leaning into those chords like he’s telling a story only he knows. And then there’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Man, if this one doesn’t make you wanna pack up and move to the mountains, nothing will. The way Weedon handles John Denver’s anthem feels understated yet powerful, letting the melody do most of the talking. It’s cozy, nostalgic, and hits all the right notes without trying too hard. What I love about this album is how unpretentious it feels. There’s no overthinking or unnecessary frills—just solid musicianship and respect for the source material. Sure, Weedon wasn’t from Nashville, but he understood what makes these songs tick. Listening to him play feels like hanging out with an old mate who happens to be really good at guitar. One thing that struck me though—why did they wait until 1978 to put this together? Maybe it was their way of saying, “Hey, we might not wear cowboy boots, but we still get it.” Either way, it’s nice to see someone bridge the gap between UK folk sensibilities and American country roots. So yeah, give 16 Country Guitar Greats a listen if you’re craving something honest and heartfelt. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “Country Roads” for days afterward. Oh, and next time someone says Brits don’t do country, hand ‘em this record. Bet they’ll change their tune real quick.
