Album Review: This Big Wonderful Night by T42 – A Folk Odyssey from Luxembourg That’ll Make You Go “Huh?” Alright, let’s talk about This Big Wonderful Night, the 2000 gem (or should I say "semi-precious stone"?) from Luxembourg’s very own T42. Released under Kitty Music—a label name that makes me think of cats in sunglasses—this album is a delightful mishmash of Folk, World, and Country vibes. It’s like someone threw a musical dartboard at those genres and said, “Whatever sticks, we’re running with it.” And honestly? It works. Now, before you roll your eyes at yet another folk album trying to be profound, hear me out. This isn’t some pretentious coffee shop playlist designed to make you feel bad for not knowing what “existential ennui” means. Nope, this is straight-up storytelling with heart—and maybe a splash of whiskey. Let’s dive into two tracks that stuck in my brain like gum on a hot sidewalk: Track Spotlight: “Great Song of Indifference” First off, how genius is that title? A song literally called Great Song of Indifference. It’s like naming your dog “Meh” just to confuse people. But don’t let the ironic name fool you; this track packs an emotional punch. The melody ambles along like a lazy Sunday morning, but the lyrics sneak up on you when you least expect it. There’s something hauntingly relatable about singing along to lines that capture life’s little shrugs—the moments where you’re kinda over it all but also… not really. By the end, I found myself humming it while staring blankly into my cereal bowl. Not gonna lie, it felt poetic. Track Spotlight: “Roadhouse Blues” Okay, so technically this might remind you of The Doors’ classic jam, but trust me, T42 puts their own spin on things here. Imagine if Jim Morrison decided to chill out a bit, grab a banjo, and hang with some Luxembourgian friends who only speak French part-time. That’s this track. It’s raw, unpolished, and has just enough grit to keep you hooked without taking itself too seriously. Plus, there’s a harmonica solo that sounds like it was recorded in someone’s garage—which, honestly, adds charm. Like, yeah, they could’ve polished it more, but why bother? Sometimes messy is better. --- The rest of the album follows suit—quirky titles, heartfelt tunes, and enough variety to keep you guessing. From the bittersweet nostalgia of “Broomielaw” to the awkwardly charming “Hello, hello, hello, goodbye & here we are again,” every track feels like flipping through old postcards. Some are faded, others vivid, but each one tells a story worth hearing. So, would I recommend This Big Wonderful Night? Absolutely. Especially if you’re into music that doesn’t try too hard to impress you. It’s like hanging out with that friend who’s a little weird but always fun to have around. Sure, they might spill beer on your couch, but hey, at least the conversation never gets boring. Final thought: Listening to this album made me realize Luxembourg probably has way cooler musicians than most of us give it credit for. Who knew? Maybe next time I visit Europe, I’ll skip Paris and head straight to Kitty Music HQ instead. Or maybe I’ll just stay home and hit repeat. Either way, good call, T42.

About T42

A straightforward rock band whose reputation was built on steady work in Luxembourg's live scene, T42 (no relation to the Dallas-based electronic band) have managed to score a number of hits since their first EP, Waiting for the Light, in 1992, and the subsequent hit single, "Marie-Anne." A second single, "Prayers for Love," a midtempo rock ballad with an interesting production, took the top spot in 1993. Welcome to Our World T42 released T42 for Added Protection in 1994, donating the profits from the album to an AIDS research foundation, following this with an AIDS benefit tour that raised more than half a million francs for the cause. A single from the album, "She Dances Until She Breaks Down," gave them another major hit. 1995's Welcome to Our World yielded number one hits "Kitty," "Autumn Leaves" and "Christmas in July," while "Welcome to Our World" and "Hello, Hello, Hello" went into the Top Five. After touring Germany, Luxembourg and England in 1996, the band recorded Bad Hair Day for a November 1996 release. The record immediately yielded a number one single, "Oceans." After the inevitable tour and festival appearances, the band members intended to take a year off, those plans being scrapped after demand for the group proved too much to ignore. The band has a fair amount of talent, with some solid material (mostly sung in English) that might do well outside of the European market, though it so far seems that major North American interest is not yet forthcoming, which may be one reason why they covered Bob Geldof's "The Great Song of Indifference." In 1998, the band toured with Fish, albeit with a somewhat altered lineup due to a mix of injuries and other commitments by band members. (Artist Biography by Steven McDonald)
