The Rhead Brothers - Supercuts From Dedicate

Supercuts From Dedicate by The Rhead Brothers: A Soft Rock Time Capsule That’s Actually Kinda Cool Alright, let’s get this straight—1977 wasn’t exactly the golden age of soft rock. Punk was busy kicking down doors, disco was owning dance floors, and here comes Supercuts From Dedicate like your chill uncle who just wants everyone to calm down with some acoustic guitars and heartfelt lyrics. Released on EMI in the UK, this album is one part mellow vibes, two parts “oh yeah, these guys can actually write a tune.” Produced by John Darnley and Phil McDonald (who probably had great hair), it’s got that classic late-‘70s polish without feeling too try-hard. Now, full disclosure: I didn’t expect much when I hit play. But holy cow, there are moments where this thing shines brighter than bell-bottoms under a strobe light. Let me break it down for you. First up, “Want You All Day”—this track grabs you right away with its breezy guitar riff that feels like lying in a hammock on a sunny afternoon. It’s not trying to change the world; it’s just happy being itself. The vocals have this raw sincerity that makes you believe they really do want you all day (awkward if you’re not into them, though). And hey, props to J. & S. Rhead for writing something so catchy yet understated. This song sticks to your brain like bubblegum to a sneaker—it’s annoying at first, but then you realize it’s kinda fun. Then there’s “Woman Of Soul,” which might as well be renamed “How To Write A Love Song Without Being Cheesy 101.” The melody sways gently, almost like it’s giving you space to breathe while still tugging at your heartstrings. There’s a warmth to it that reminds me of old-school vinyl crackle—a sound modern playlists desperately lack. Plus, whoever sings about “eyes like midnight skies” clearly knows their way around poetic metaphors. Or maybe they were just really into astrology? Either way, it works. The rest of the tracks aren’t bad either—I mean, how could you mess up titles like I Have My Pride or Let Me Love You (No Title)? Okay, the latter sounds like someone forgot to name it before deadline, but hey, we’ve all been there. Here’s the kicker: listening to Supercuts From Dedicate today feels like finding an old mixtape in your attic. Sure, it’s dated, but in the best possible way. It’s proof that even in the shadow of bigger genres and louder trends, soft rock could hold its own. Honestly, after spinning this record, I kinda wish more bands would embrace the art of subtlety instead of shouting everything through autotune. So, final verdict? If you’re looking for stadium anthems or existential crises set to music, keep scrolling. But if you dig laid-back grooves with enough charm to make you smile, give this gem a spin. Oh, and next time someone says ‘70s soft rock is boring, throw this album at them. Metaphorically, of course. Physically throwing albums is frowned upon now. And hey, bonus points for making me Google “Rhead Brothers” afterward. Turns out, mystery is underrated.

About The Rhead Brothers

John Rhead and Steve Rhead The fact that in the golden era great West Coast music was not only created in sunny California, but could also flourish in the rather rainy Great Britain, was demonstrated not least by the English duo The Rhead Brothers in the late 1970s. The brothers John and Steve Rhead recorded two albums whose quality could compete with any American production and which are still sought after and loved by many music aficionados today. WEST COAST SOUL.de talked with John Rhead about their musical beginnings, the making of their two excellent albums, Dedicate and Black Shaheen, his memories of the Muscle Shoals music scene and the rediscovery of the Rhead Brothers in 2016.
