Killing Joke - Laugh I Nearly Bought One

Review by Joyce Weatherford

Laugh I Nearly Bought One: Killing Joke’s Wild Ride Through Chaos and Catharsis Killing Joke’s Laugh I Nearly Bought One is the kind of album that grabs you by the collar, shakes your soul, and leaves you wondering if it just saved or ruined your day. Released in 1992—a year when grunge was king and pop was trying way too hard—this record carved out its own weird little corner of brilliance. It’s not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t feel alive. The genres? Oh, where do we even start? Rock, Pop/Rock, Electronic… sure, those labels work, I guess. But styles like Heavy Metal, Post-Punk, Industrial, and Dance-Rock? That’s more like it. This isn’t an album for people who want things neat and tidy. It’s messy, loud, and unapologetically ambitious. And honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. Let’s talk tracks. First up, “Love Like Blood.” If this song doesn’t give you goosebumps, check your pulse because something might be wrong. Jaz Coleman’s vocals are haunting, dripping with raw emotion while still feeling strangely robotic. The guitars gnash at you like a pack of wolves, and the rhythm section—courtesy of Raven on bass and either Martin Atkins or Big Paul Ferguson on drums—is relentless. There’s a reason this track has stuck around in the band’s live sets for decades; it’s got teeth, heart, and enough swagger to fill a stadium. When the chorus hits, it’s like being punched in the chest—but in a good way. You know? Then there’s “Empire Song,” which feels like stepping into a dystopian disco. It’s got that New Wave sheen mixed with Punk attitude, all wrapped up in a big ol’ industrial bow. Geordie’s guitar work here is sharp enough to cut glass, and the keys from Jaz Coleman add this eerie layer that sticks to your brain long after the song ends. It’s catchy as hell, but also kinda unsettling, like dancing in a room full of mirrors that reflect versions of yourself you don’t recognize. Weirdly addictive. What stands out about Laugh I Nearly Bought One is how chaotic it feels without ever losing control. Tracks like “Unspeakable” and “Requiem” bring the heavy, while cuts like “Exit” and “Pssyche” lean into their electronic side, creating this wild patchwork of sounds that shouldn’t work together but somehow do. Credit goes to the band themselves—they produced most of the album—and Chris Kimsey, who mixed some of the later tracks. They let the chaos breathe instead of smoothing it over. And can we take a moment to appreciate the credits? Two drummers (Martin Atkins AND Big Paul Ferguson), two vocalists, and Mike Coles doing design work that probably looks better than whatever you’re wearing right now. These guys weren’t messing around. So yeah, Laugh I Nearly Bought One isn’t for everyone. Some folks will call it disjointed, others might say it tries to do too much. But isn’t that what makes great art? Taking risks, breaking rules, and leaving a trail of beautiful wreckage behind? Here’s the kicker though: listening to this album feels like flipping through someone’s diary during the apocalypse. Intense, personal, and maybe a little bit unhinged—but impossible to ignore. And hey, if nothing else, it proves one thing: Killing Joke didn’t just make music—they made experiences. Now go listen to it again. Or don’t. Your loss.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Laugh I Nearly Bought One* by Killing Joke is like a musical chameleon. Released in 1992, it blends so many styles—post-punk, industrial, heavy metal, and even dance-rock—that it feels like a genre mashup party. Tracks like "Love Like Blood" and "Eighties" show off their knack for mixing raw energy with moody vibes. Fun fact: the band themselves produced most of the album, but they also had Chris Kimsey, known for his work with The Rolling Stones, mix a few tracks. Oh, and get this—two drummers, Martin Atkins and Big Paul Ferguson, shared duties on the album. That’s a lot of beats!

Great snare drum sound on the intro. Not sure how they got that. It appears to be miked at some distance to get the sound of the room, but it also sounds sharp too.

This is how you start a debut album the classic jaz Coleman synth riff and Geordie's sledgehammer riffs and it kicks you in the ass and gets you pumped

Saw them as one of the opening bands at a festival sort of show for the Police near Toronto. I remember them being incredibly intense and great. They left with a derogatory comment: Go on back to your love songs, or something of the sort. Hahaha, the Go Go's were coming up soon, maybe? That said, given that Iggy Pop The Payolas, and The Specials were there? It wasn't all love songs!

Man watching video
The clock keeps on ticking
He doesn't know why
He's just cattle for slaughter
The, requiem
When the meaningful words
When they cease to function
When there's nothing to say
When will it start bothering you?
The, requiem
Only a hint of religion
Uncensors to its false depravity
The sound of breaking glass
This is a reflection
