The Servants - Its My Turn

Review by TERRY BONFRYJOE

It’s My Turn by The Servants: A Scrappy Indie Rock Gem That Still Kicks Ass Let’s cut the crap—1989 wasn’t exactly bursting with groundbreaking indie rock albums, but It’s My Turn by The Servants came out swinging like a pissed-off teenager at a house party. This UK-born record, dropped via Glass Records, is raw, unpolished, and kinda beautiful in its own scrappy way. With Luke Haines shredding on guitar AND bass (yeah, he’s doing double duty), Hugh Whitaker pounding the drums like his life depends on it, and David Westlake delivering vocals that feel more like a conversation than a performance, this thing hits different. Harold Burgon produced it, and you can tell he let the band stay messy instead of cleaning them up too much. Good call. Now let’s talk tracks because not every song here sticks to your ribs, but some do—and hard. Take “Afterglow,” for example. It’s one of those tunes where the melody sneaks up on you when you least expect it. Westlake sounds like he’s half-singing, half-muttering about something lost or forgotten, and honestly? It works. You don’t need flashy lyrics or over-the-top riffs to make an impact; sometimes all it takes is a vibe, and damn if this track doesn’t have it. The whole thing feels understated yet loaded with emotion, like a secret only you get to keep. Then there’s “Do Or Be Done.” If “Afterglow” is the quiet kid in the corner, this one’s the loudmouth starting fights in the parking lot. It’s got grit, attitude, and enough energy to knock you off your feet. Haines’ guitar work is relentless, buzzing around like a wasp trapped in a jar, while Whitaker’s drumming keeps things tight without suffocating the chaos. And Westlake? Dude sounds like he couldn’t care less what anyone thinks—which is probably why it rules so much. These guys weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel; they just wanted to kick it down the road and see where it landed. Here’s the kicker though: listening to It’s My Turn now feels almost… prophetic? Like, these dudes didn’t know they were laying groundwork for future indie acts who’d trade polish for personality. Sure, it’s rough around the edges—some might even say sloppy—but isn’t that what makes it real? Most modern bands wouldn’t dare sound this unhinged, this human. So yeah, if you’re into music that punches first and asks questions later, give this album a spin. Just don’t blame me if it leaves a mark—you’ve been warned. Oh, and hey, fun fact: Luke Haines went on to front The Auteurs after this. Weird how life throws curveballs, huh? Guess being a double-duty badass paid off.

Interesting fact about Album

Here's an interesting fact: The Servants' album *It's My Turn* features Luke Haines, who not only played guitar but also handled bass duties. This was before he became a cult figure in the UK indie scene with his later projects. It’s wild to think about how one person shaped so much of the sound on that 1989 record.

Who's free to fly through the big city streets tonight
I've known joy and I've known pain
That light at the end of the tunnel is a train headed this way
It reminds me what love is
Says it's my turn

Stood beside, said "Not yet,"
Watched the one whom you love travel off into the sunset
The occupied angel's illusory smile
The guided missile reminds me what love is
Now it's my turn

I've got plans, I've got hope
In every unopened envelope
With a blind love, love of your life
The voice that brings alive what it writes

You deny what the truth is, hiding pleasure behind guilty excuses
They say, "We know the game that you're playing
"We know you know more than you're saying"

Who's free to fly through the big city streets tonight
I've known joy and I've known pain
That light at the end of the tunnel, it's a train headed this way
To remind me what love is
Says it's my turn

Please remind me what love is when it's my turn....

I've got plans, I've got hope
In every unopened envelope
With a blind love, love of your life
The voice that brings alive what it writes....
