Album Review: Sevens by Subhead (1997) If you’re into electronic music that feels like it’s been beamed straight from some alternate dimension, Sevens by Subhead is a must-listen. Released in ‘97 under their own label, this UK gem dives headfirst into experimental techno vibes that still feel fresh today. Mastered by Nilz, the album has this raw, unpolished charm that makes it stick with you long after the last beat fades. Let’s talk tracks for a sec. First up, “Built Of Glass.” This one hits hard right outta the gate—icy synths layered over pounding kicks, like walking through a neon-lit city at 3 AM. It’s got this hypnotic groove that feels both mechanical and kinda fragile, which I guess ties into the whole "glass" theme? Either way, it’s unforgettable. Then there’s “Nordy Boys,” which takes things in a completely different direction. The track opens with these eerie, almost alien-like tones before dropping into something halfway between a rave anthem and an industrial soundscape. It’s the kind of tune that makes you wanna move but also leaves your brain buzzing with questions. Like… what even is a Nordy Boy? Other tracks like “Alternate Gothic” and “Sleeping Bag” keep the energy flowing, though they lean more understated compared to the standouts. And yeah, there’s an untitled track too, because why not? Feels very on-brand for an album as quirky as this one. What sticks with me about Sevens isn’t just the sound—it’s how unapologetically itself it is. Back in ‘97, when dance music was getting slicker and more polished, Subhead went full weirdo genius mode instead. They weren’t trying to fit in, and honestly? That’s probably why people are still talking about this record decades later. Random thought to leave you with: Listening to Sevens feels like finding a mixtape someone left behind in a club bathroom. You don’t know who made it or why, but damn if it doesn’t make you wanna hit repeat.
