Album Review: Old Folks Boogie You Aint Too Old by Al Simmons, Slim Green And The Cats From Fresno Alright, let’s talk about this gem of an album that kinda sneaked under the radar but deserves way more love. Released in 2011 on Dig Records (yep, UK-based), Old Folks Boogie You Aint Too Old is one of those funky, soulful rides you didn’t know you needed. It’s got that old-school Rhythm & Blues vibe with a modern twist—like your grandpa telling stories but with a killer bassline in the background. First off, the title track, “Old Folks Boogie,” hits hard right outta the gate. I mean, it’s impossible not to move to it. The groove feels like someone dusted off a 70s dance floor and gave it new life. There’s just something about how the horns punch through while the rhythm section keeps things tight—you can almost picture yourself in some smoky club where everyone’s got their own little shuffle going on. Plus, the lyrics? They’re cheeky as hell, reminding us that age ain’t nothin’ but a number when it comes to having fun. Honestly, if this doesn’t get your feet tapping, check your pulse. Then there’s “You Aint Too Old.” This one sticks with me because it’s got heart. Like, real-deal heartfelt energy. The vocals have this raw honesty that makes you feel like they’re singing directly to YOU. Whether you're 25 or 85, this tune reminds you that it’s never too late to cut loose and live a little. The guitar riffs are smooth without trying too hard, and the backing vocals add this cozy layer, like a warm blanket for your ears. Honestly, it’s the kind of song that could soundtrack any road trip or lazy Sunday afternoon. Now, here’s the thing—I wasn’t expecting much from this album at first glance. Funk/Soul isn’t exactly flooding my playlists these days, but man, did this record surprise me. It’s got grit, charm, and enough swagger to fill a room twice its size. And honestly? Listening to it feels like finding a forgotten vinyl at a thrift store—it’s unassuming at first, but once you give it a spin, BAM, instant favorite. So yeah, do yourself a favor and check out Old Folks Boogie You Aint Too Old. It’s proof that good music doesn’t need fancy gimmicks or flashy production; sometimes all it takes is honesty, talent, and maybe a couple of cats from Fresno who know what they’re doing. Oh, and P.S., don’t be surprised if you catch yourself humming “Old Folks Boogie” while waiting in line at the grocery store. Just saying.

I darn near wore out a 45 of this down-home classic. I heard it on the Johnny Otis radio show from KFOX in Long Beach when I was a teenager, and now I can tune in on YouTube when I definitely qualify as a member of Old Folks.
Terrific song.
